94173, Engine Dies... Posted by Jem09, Oct-29-05 06:52 AM
My engine just died on my wife. I have a 97' RS with 144,200+. She basically told me it's dyin' on her. I get there and restarted it and it was idleing fine. I popped the hood and looked for anythin' suspect. Rough idle, sounds/noises, but I couldn't tell of anythin', then again, theres heavy traffic around me so I can't depend on the hearing factor. I thought it could be either the ignition (spark wires, plugs), I changed the plugs with new NGK's and I just (1-2 weeks ago) purchased new MSD wires. The MSD coil is rather new with only a good 5k/6k miles of use put on it. I also thought about the Fuel delivery, looked for leaks around the rail/injectors, but that's good, haven't checked the fuel pump or weither it goes on with just the ignition on (knowin' my fortune, that's not goin' to be it either). I quickly felt it wasn't the ignition/fuel because it can idle fine. As soon as I put it in Reverse/Drive it'll begin to hesitate and die slowly, I tap on the accelerator a few times and it comes back sometimes. The acc. pedal feels loose when I do this....I've basically been turnin' the car off in N (while on the road drivin') then restartin' it, puttin' it on Drive and doin' this repeatedly. I just came from Advance Auto Parts and had a diagnoises, EGR was the only code that popped, but I know that's because I removed the entire system and blocked it off. I also installed a resistor for it, but I can safely assume my prob. has Nothin' to do with the EGR. So the only other thing that comes to mind is Misfire or somethin' def. wrong with my cylinder(s).
Any help or opinions will be appreciated greatly, this is my only car and of course, I need to work...
Peace, Jem

I've checked if the fuel pump turns on when I turn on the ignition, and it does without a prob.... The Timing Belt is good, not loose nor is it missin' any teeth... What else could my prob. be?

Yes A clogged CAT can and most likely will cause hesitation, even stalling if it's bad enough. And you say your Accellerator feels "loose". I would look into why that is as well. Check your cable and your TB, make sure they are both clean and lube the cable with some Penetrating oil (WD-40). Let us know how it turns out and what your problem is.

I'm def. goin' to look into it all... Word...
I also checked for a vacuum leak, but nothin' is wrong/broke/cracked... I removed the EGR a while back and doesn't the line from the EGR that goes to the back of the Intake Manifold a Vacuum line as well???
Thank you for your suggestions, I appreciate it shazow1969...

Yes the vac line to the EGR Solinoid is on the back of the manifold you should be able to get a rubber vac cap from autozone or you could do what I did and get the right size vacuum line and put a small bolt or screw in the end of it with some silicone sealant on the threads and let it cure before driving (just over night would be fine).

Good lookin' out for your input and advise. However, you may or may not believe this bullsh!t... After all the checkin' and advise I've followed after gettin' it from here, the f!ckin' prob. was so simple. It was my Venom 400! I knew I should've sold that sh!t after I installed and tested it. I purchased it brand new, and 9 out of 10 times, I had it off while drivin', I rarely turned it on. The only time I did have it on was every few weekends when I knew there would be the "F&F" crew on the streets thinkin' there were boosted or had 1000hp naturally aspirated... The Venom 400 wasn't what it stated it would be, but it did help me accel. a little quicker through the first gear.
The prob. was the tap on the MAP sensor, I can assume it was addin' resistance to it and causin' the sensor to basically f!ck up. And this was happenin' with the Venom 400 off. I found out by unpluggin' a few things and testin' them, I tested the Spark Wires (good), Coil (good), then I thought about the comp./Venom 400, I pulled that plug, turned the car on, tested it and my 2G was so "berry berry happy" I took that sh!t off... Word...
I still thank you for hittin' me off with knowledge and help with my situation. I'm still goin' to apply them when I come across any probs. in the future (because you know I/we are)...
