i think 160 in all 4 is kinda low, might be time for a rebuild, my car has 200 all the way across and i believe the lowest it should be is 170 or 175?? 160 is to low but than again it depends on your set up:scratch

set up is basicly stock.. could problems in the head be effecting the compression?both od the dodge dealerships said 160 was normal? still sound like a HG problem?

was that 160 fully warmed up, or was that cold? If it was cold, then that is just fine for compression. If that smoke is oil burned smoke, its most likely from worn valve stem oil seals in the head. A typical HG replace job at the dealer will not have those replaced. If you engine has over 100k on it, i'd bet this is the problem. The cylinders in these engines really seem to take wear very well. I just opened up a 420A this week with 80k on it, and the crosshatch from the factory was still almost completely there. I wouldnt expect for one of these engines to burn oil from worn rings till well up to almost 200k, providing that oil has been changed and all maintence has been kept up on it of course.

mine has 190423.8 on it...and my walls still look good, copression was at 150, 160, 195, 195-6ish did a head gasket jobe and vavle seals and compression is now 195ish acrost the board

XtremeRS; u said a HG job from dealer wouldnt have replaced those parts? if they pressure checked the head, would it point to worn seals/seats or what ev u said it prolly was? if they get the whole kit, why wouldnt they replace all the seals from the HG up? please lets me kno! thanx

Pressure testing the head only checks the valve seats for any leakage/being worn. Unless they pulled the valves out of the head, then i'd highly doubt they replaced the valve stem oil seals. The oil seals have no bearing on cylinder compression.

what about a leak down test? what test would point out the those problems? my car was smoking and burning oil, i told em to fix it, all they did was H and it never stopped, now they r basicly sayin Fu...

There really isnt a test for finding leaky valve stem oil seals. You can take the intake manifold off the head, and visually check the intake ports in the head, to see any oil residue in there...shouldt be any at all. Worn valve stem oil seals leak too much oil past the valve guides, and then into the intake ports, then into the engine where its burned. You will see most of the oil on the intake side, since its under vacuume and that helps "pull" the oil into the engine.

if a dealship did the work, would they have noticed these signs, ? i aked them to stop the brning oil, so they should have investigated alittle more ? right?

The dealership knows that you're not going to want to hear that it's going to cost you $2000 to stop the smoke from your $2000 car. They went in and fixed the cause of the smoke. If the smoke returns and it is directly resultant to the work they performed (good luck proving that), then they would be liable to make things right. If they determined that the HG was the issue and fixed the HG, but it turns out you also have a sealing issue inside the head, then they will be happy to fix it for you. They would be under no obligation to fix anything beyond what you authorised them to do before.
You: It's smoking. Make it stop. Them: We think it's the HG. We will replace that. You: Cool. Thank you. Here is my arm. I will bring the leg in later. Them: Thank you.
Translation? You authorised them to change your HG. There is no mechanic in the world that would hand you something that said they would eradicate any smoking problems for a specific price unless that price reflected replacing everything. You may have thought you had a deal where they would fix anything causing the smoke, but you signed and paid for a HG replacement in the interest of solving the smoke.
Sorry. You didn't give them that leg, yet, did you? They're gonna want it, but you might be walking for a while, so I dunno...

they told me theyd have the head checked and all that to see if i need a valve job, i was like, "ok" they called, said i didnt need a valve job, so that was good, well, 4k later, turns out i did need a valve job, so they at fault for misidagnosis? now the hg gotta be redone, so what did i pay for? a nice fuck in the ass with no lube?

If they said you didn't need a valve job, replaced the HG and then it turned out you needed a valve job after all, then it would not be unreasonable to expect them to replace the HG when they had the head off for the valve job at no additional cost to you.
Sorry to hear you just spent $4,000 for a compeletely stock engine. Mine only cost $6,000 and I've rebuilt the bottom twice. That's a lot of money to spend in the interest of eliminating smoke. I would have just let the bitch smoke while I waited for my built long block to be made and shipped to me from Chicago. Damn.
Definitely a dry fuck in the ass with no lube.

I agree with the valve stem seals. The seals can be replaced with the head on the car. If the head is removed to replace the seals it might be a good idea to have the valves reground to clean up any deposits.

actually the best test for valve stem seals is revving it way up and then completely letting off the throttle, if it smokes worse after throttle is released then it's sucking the oil past the seals from the excess vacuum, every time i've seen bad stem seals they always did that
