Just redid the timing on my car and have a question.

The belt has good tension, but when I pull the throttle cable and get into higher rpms, the timing belt shifts a little to the side, and when the rpms drop back down, the belt moved to its normal position.

Is this normal?

Mine goes back and forth at a constant rate, due to my choice of a shitty autozone waterpump (the pulley wobbles). I forgot who, but someone told me their's has done this for years with no problem (built & turbo'd).

mine is same way it shifts along the pulley and gears but not much and dont seem to bother anything. I think as long as your not rubbing the covers in there you dont have anythign to worry about. If you doubt your tension take a torque wrench and put 20 - 21 lbs pressure on the tensioner pulley and then slide the belt tensioner against the pulley block and then tighten it there. That should be correct belt tension. Being to tight is just as bad as too loose +).

Shifting a little is fine, but keep a CLOSE eye on it. If it ever goes off the cam gears even a little, or gets any worse over time, you should probably replace the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, AND tensioner arm & bracket assembly.

Several people have had the tensioner bracket break on them, and I suspect if they had looked, they would have seen their belt moving around beforehand.

You could also try tightening the crank sprocket down closer to the oil pump, as that's the only piece that holds the timing belt in place.
