I have a broken dowel pin on one of my Crane 18 cams. Any anyone ever repaired one of these? Looking for advise.

Did you buy these on eBay, or were trying to sell them on eBay? There was a set on there with a broken dowel.

I imagine you could take it to a machine shop and they can fix it.

I bought the cams from that guy on eBay. I knew the pin was broken. I figure you can't beat a set of like-new Crane 18 cams for only $300. Just gotta fix the pin now.

are the dowel pins you speak off the ones that the cam gears fit onto and are cast into the material? if that were the case you might could drill it out and put in your own dowel

May be difficult if it's sheered off, that's why I was thinking a machine shop.

Dino- I'm not sure what you're getting at. Do the stock camshafts have the dowel pin hole drilled all the way through, with access on the back side as well? Because the Crane camshafts don't have access to the back side... so I can't use a hammer and punch.

The broken pin is recessed in the hole, but I may be able to remove it with an extractor/ez-out.

I didn't remember if they went all the way through or not. if not, you could always try a very sharp drill bit slightly smaller than the hole.

The dowels don't actually hold the gear in place anyway, the torque on the bolt does. The dowels break because the bolt backs out. S'why torque spec on those things is like 70ft/lbs or something insane...

I know. I think I'll try the extractor first, using a smaller drill bit... if that doesn't work, I'll use a larger drill bit, just a hair smaller that the hole.

Thanks for the info about the dowel pin... I'm glad it's a replaceable OEM part.

I have had the dowel replaced on a ZZ4 cam a few years back. Had to take it to a machine shop because the dan dowel was pressed in so tight. Cost me 20.00 with the replacement of the pin
