It seems that whenever I start my car in neutral, or push in the clutch, every now and again it's gets a sparatic idle. Nothing insane, or anything like that the highest it's ever got was 1400rpm's, but even still that didn't seem right to me. Also, under WOT, at about 4500+ rpm I can hear a distinct whistling sound, almost like a turbo (haha, I wish). The previous owner told me that the most he could figure was that it was the AEM CAI just sucking in air real fast. However, he was no mechanic. Anybody ever have this problem? Also, whenever I crank the wheel over as far as it will go, it makes a really loud squeal, anything I can do to remedy that, or does it have anything to do w/ my other problems? the squealing from turning the wheel is your powersteering. check to make sure it's topped off. you can also try bleeding the system. when there's air or the level is low it'll make that horrible squealing noise and everyone in the parking lot will look at you funny. not that i know from experience or anything.

if you think you may have a vac leak, start with the obvious - check all your vac lines. i just blew in mine but if you don't wanna be ghetto you could use a compressor or somethin. as far as checking the manifold people have suggested spraying carb-cleaner on the seals with the engine running. if the engine bogs when you spray a certain area then that's where your leak is (the carb cleaner is being sucked into the engine through the leak and causing the engine to bog). i think someone also mentioned just lighting up a cigarette so you can see if the smoke gets sucked in anywhere.

for me my vac leak in my manifold to head gasket started out the same way with that high pitched whistling. eventually the noise went away and my symptoms got worse (the leak got bigger). by the time i changed it my leak was so bad i could plug the IAC passage and the engine would not die. that's another way to check for a major leak - plug the IAC passage and if the engine's still running you've definately got a sizeable leak somewhere.
