92929, Carb'd 420A? Maybe... Posted by RyMon, Sep-08-05 05:39 PM
So, for the past few months I've been debating what to do with my fuel system. I have a set of 550cc injectors on it from an Evo8, but to even run the thing I have to drop by base-line fuel pressure waaay down, and I still need a megasquirt or such to tune it.
So my friend is hunting around on eBay, looking for a dual webber carb to put on his RX-7... and comes across 3 of them strapped to a Jag intake for an l6... He only needs one. If I can find an intake manifold flange, I could fab up a manifold to hold the other two carbs... one 45mm barrel per port. I mean, forget computer tuning, you can't beat the ease of tuning you can get with a nice carb setup. And there's just something about the sound of a side-draft carb setup. ^_^
I am turbo'd, so there'll still be a hat around the carbs, but in the end it'd basically be an individual throttle body setup... and to top it off, it's unique... at least, it's the first time I've heard of anyone trying anything like this.
What do you guys think? Know where I could come up with an intake flange, or will I have to make one?

You have the first really unique idea I've seen in awhile... quite refreshing actually. I've had a few beers so bare with me. I've built a carb turbo car and it's really tricky. I had also to do it with a mechanical pump, so we had to make that boost sensitive. I'd really look into how side draft webers are modified for turbo VW motors. Have an idea for ignition and a way to defeat the rest of OBD. Personally injection is way easier to tune compared to a turbo carb setup. Also try turbo Corvair stuff too.

This has been done by Neon guys before. I think one guy had some good results with a carb setup. Might want to do some searching over there.

I thought ease of tuning was less important than level of tuning?:shrug
Edit: god damn typos
I figure since I cant stop fixing the damn thing, I'll just create more problems to work on. :) The stock pile has begun. Parts PArts PARts PARTs PARTS!!! I'm a novice listen to what I say and make your own conclusion. If I'm wrong tell me and I will learn. Thanks be to the 2gnt Gods may they grant me turbo and fruits of the Earth. Amen.

Buddy, stick with fuel injection. You already have good injectors. Get a megasquirt and just save yourself the trouble of putting some carbs on. It would be cool, sure, but driveability on a Weber system sucks, performance is all back and forth, and there is little compesation for environmental factors so it will run lean when hot and too rich when cold, etc... it would look very cool, though.

shouldn't that be reversed?

hmm ... hot = air less dense = less air going in. cold = air more dense = more air going in. Whoops you are right :D For some reason I am thinking that carburetors work in the opposite way just because of the principles they are based on, but it has been a long time since I owned a carburated car so I can't say for sure. but everyone I've ever talked to who has used Webers on anything hates them. Fuel injection has come a LONG way since Webers were in vogue with the racing community, and now EFI has far surpassed anything carbs can muster, except in ultra-high-performance drag racing applications (like the guys who go 9s in all-motor Hondas).

If you had just an NA engine setup, a carb is by far the most simplistic way to give fuel. But for a turbocharged engine, you have many different variables to work with, and tyring to dial in carb jets and tuning it, just wont be "fine" enough IMO. Ported fuel injection will always, by far, be the best way to deliver fuel compared to a carb setup. The fine tunability, enrichements, cold starts, ect, are wayyyy better and easily tuned with a such a system as the Megasquirt or other standalone. It would be neat to see such a setup perform well, but in all honesty, I think you would be creating a bigger headache with tuning than if it were with a standalone and ported fuel injection. Once it's understood, tuning fuel injection is really not that hard or involved.

This is true, but then again, half the reason I'm building the car is to A) Have something unique (After all, if that wasn't the goal, I'd prob'ly have a 4g63), and B) Have something to try new ideas with.
Thanks for the good input thusfar. I'm considering giving this a try just to see what it'll do. After all, if I decide to go back, it's just a matter of changing around some fuel lines and bolting in the other manifold, then plugging in a few harnesses.

Also keep in mind if you are going to go with the "carbHat" idea, you will need to o-ring the carbs, otherwise you will find yourself with unwanted fuel leaks. The alternative is to "box" the carbs, this is where you actually enclose the carbs inside the pressurized intake. Vortech has been doing this newer design for a few years if not more.

Using Lectron 40mm motor cycle carbs has been done. Here they are in a picture.
