I have an RS and i just bought a new stainless steel header for it, and in the near future i would like to get a turbo, but all of the turbo kits i have seen have manifolds that bolt up to the turbo...well my header is round and slides into the downpipe, does anybody have advice on how i could make a turbo fit, or is there kits for this?

First off Welcome to the site, see your new here. For your question, No, it will not work. The fabrication you would have to do would not be worth the time or money( I really doubt it could even work anyway). Just use the manifold that comes with the turbo kit when you get it and sell your header to someone else.

why did you buy a header if you were plannin on going turbo? :shrug

i hope you didn't buy a CAI too.... :P

Yes it will work. The question is, will it work well? When you consider the average cost of a premade log-style turbo manifold for a 2GNT is around $400 (and a custom, SS tubular runs nearly a grand), to cut a bit off something you already own and then modify it is a more economical soultion.

Issues to consider would be the placement of the turbo. The further away from the exhaust ports you mount it, the less efficient it will be. Also, will the header material be durable enough to withstand the intermittent (and, in some people's cases) extreme temperature cycling from hot to HOLYFUCKTHATSEFFINHOTMAN! ;)

A turbo works by converting energy from the exhaust into motion of a compressor wheel. Aside from that, it's all a question of efficiency and durability. You get exhaust gas turning that turbine and it will turn the compressor as well.

My .02.

use your stock header top and bolt on a 14B or any eclipse turbo with that same flange. it will work. and it will fit exactly in that space too.

I wonder if some of the new guys answering these questions done their homework? Man it looks like I need to spend more time in the tech sections so some poor soul don't end up spending shit loads of money or fucking up their car.

well they do but they can't relay the new found info back so they make sense.
If I'm not mistaken, hes talking about bolting a 14b to a stock exhaust manifold.

He was one of those guys also who were all jazzed on making there own custom backyard turbo kit and I remember him asking all sorts of questions about this.

Maybe its just me, but when speaking about exhaust I grew up learning that a manifold means stock(oem) and header means aftermarket. Even though he said "stock".... he said "stock header" and in my eyes thats very misleading when were talking about a 420a.

I'm sure it will work, but will take some fabrication..I've actually always wanted to try using an aftermarket 4-1 header and weld a turbo flange on it..Most aftermarket headers are tubular and equal length, which is perfect for a turbo application. The main issues you will have will be space/fitment/clearance issues, since it will put the turbo down lower than a log style manifold, or a full custom equal length tubular manifold. Log style mani's really are not that great for flow on a turbo application, but they are easy to make, and provide sufficient clearance all around. Hack your aftermarket header, weld up a t3/t4 turbo flange, and check for fitment. A t3/t4 flange will acomodate MANY different turbos, so you have a pretty wide selection choice. It may ultimately be easier to get a 420A exhaust flange, and make your own turbo mainifold. Flanges can be had for around 45 bucks if i remember right. This assumes you have the proper skill and tools to do it though.

actually, there is no such thing as a t3/t4 flange ;) just a T3 flange (there is also the split T04 flange which is not supported nearly as much), which lets you use approx. eleventybillion different turbochargers... from a tiny .42 A/R T3 to a ball bearing GT35R, so if you are going to hack up your header to bolt on a turbo, my 0.02 is that you should definitely get a T3 flange to open up hundreds of upgrade options down the road.

A manifold is cast iron, while a header is of tubular design. That's the way I look at it. For some reason it bugs the crap out of me when they say 'stock header'. 87-93 Mustangs (maybe other years too) did, in fact, come with stock tubular headers, but the newer ones have cast iron manifolds.

But I do agree, it'll work if you get a flange and weld it to the header. You'll just have to deal with placement/fitment issues.

Get a turbo from a 1st Gen eclipse or talon. It bolts right up! DO IT!

I promise you won't regret it one bit, its a really good idea!
