ive heard ppl say a SOHC and a DOHC neon block will work for our motors . what year neon must they be from ? cause the junk yard has tons of them i found.. it coulnt hurt to have a spare. What would that do to the HP and compression using that block ( single or dual ) with our head? anyone know

Yes the neon bottom end will work in general. The pcv assy will need to be plugged which is directly under the intake manifold. the sohc and dohc casting is the same. pistons ect are different ratio but if your looking at building a block then you will be fine.

Just like what Terry said, there are a few differences. On the SOHC model, they're lower compression and don't have the valve reliefs cut in them. AFAIK, the DOHC block is the same CR & pistons.

Also, on the 95 model (not sure if others are like this), there are two ports on the front of the block that go to a little box. Not sure what's for exactly, but it's probably for emissions. I'm sure the tubes can be removed and you could freeze plug them.

is what im really asking is one day when i blow my block apart and am short on cash can i just get a cheap but good shape neon block from a dual or single cam and bolt my head and tranny and all right on to it or no. and what years can i use ? 95- ?

From what I've learnt searching for a block... as long as it's a 420A bottom end, with the same compression ratio as the DSM bottom end (10.5:1) it should be fine.

But if you are looking for a block to rebuild, only the thickness in the block may vary from casting to casting, but it all designed the same.
