I hope to fire up my 2.5 in a month or so. I am just taking care of the small stuff. (wiring) I also went a little overboard wiht my project so it cost more that I origionally planned.

best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph(no traction)

i went to pick up my srt tensioners today from the dealer and he told me that they're having alot of problems with them failing, jumping time and etc. i haven't heard anybody here talk about that recently. are all the neon/srt/pt guys throwing belts?? also, i have a 98 block with the old style tensioner and with the srt setup, there isn't a bolt hole for the mounting bolts. what is everybody doing to correct that??

Uhhh.. you sure you're putting the tensioner in the right place? I've actually seen one bolted to a 98 block. Fit fine, stock holes.

have you read the cam tensioner section on stockums's site? the srt idler bolts into the srt water pump, so no reusing the stratus water pump then? and Bob shows a spacer block that i never hear anybody mention, what's up with that?? would it be a bad thing to run the old style spring tensioner??

i dont think so, a lot of neon guys get away with both. then again, some have horror stories. i personally prefer the srt tensioner for that reason alone.

you bring up a lot of interesting things i havent experienced first hand, because i had a few different parts and a 97 block. i didnt run into any timing issues at all with the srt tensioner though, josiah ran the same one. it all bolted up nicely for us.

if you already have the tensioner, just get the srt water pump. it flows more anyway. kise still hooks it up i think, cant be to much.

anyway, ill cruise by and we'll chat. i got the pump built for the 700r4 so if you wished me goodluck, it worked! lol

The setup I saw.. nothing bolted to the SRT4 waterpump. Had an SRT4 oilpump and waterpump on it, SRT4 tensioner? I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

according to stockums site, the srt waterpump has am extra mounting hole where the tensioners idler pulley bolts into. he has pics to show it also. i'll pick up the srt pump today and i know my stratus pump does not have that hole.

??????

What tensioner idler pulley? The tensioner is totally self contained....

< edit>

The pics on Bob Stockum's site *ARE NOT* SRT4 parts. probably PT ot PT Turbo, but certainly not SRT4 parts, as i've personally seen them and help them in my hands - i know what they look like.

bob stockum used the very first generation tensionner from 95-96
it was a hydrolic tensionner with a pulley similar to the ones on our 2.0 but unlike our 2.0 the pulley that tension the belt is bolted right on the water pump and not on the engine block
this setup was used for a few more years in Caravan but not in cloud cars

problems with that setup, you can't use the oil pump that you want
unless you use a spacer block to fit under the tensionner
without the spacer you are stuck with a caravan oil pump which put the oil filter almost rubbing the asphalt or you have to use the cloud car one which put the oil filter horizontaly and almost impossible to put and remove because it's too close to the firewall

but the biggest problem is the water pump breaking in 2 when you start to have big cams
the water pump is made of some cast aluminium alloy just like ours and with the pulley bolted on it the water pump see lots of stress when you start to play with Crane 16 and over
a friend of mine went throught 2 water pump breaks on his 2.4 neon with crane 18 until he switched to a srt-4 style setup and crane 22

according to stockums site, the roller that sits above the hyd tensioner is directly mounted to the waterpump. i thought the srt and pt turbo engines were the same...(?) is this not true?? i don't see the second bolt hole for the srt hyd tensioner on my block. i'll get pics if i can find a digicam...chris

The blocks are similar (as are all Chrysler 4 cylinders) but not even close to the same.

the second bolt hole is actually the same hole that is used with the engin support , top corner front side

you bolt the srt-4 tensionner down with 1 bolt and tight it enought to stay in place witht the belt on like with 70 lb of torque , and you retight it more once the engine is sitting under the hood if needed

well, chrysler sent me the spring type tensioner anyway..(??) but whatever works for now, i guess. i should have my oil pan and baffle setup finished tomorrow and i'll keep you fellas updated on the progress if you want. i'm taking pics also, let me know who can host them.

so tell me. i may be comming across a bunch of money... is it worth it?? is it reliable? yes or no. be as blunt as you want.

well, if you have some decent fabrication skills and a small machine shop handy... get 'er done bro!! the oil pan, pass mount, and water pipe were the only real pains imo.

Even the waterpipe isn't that hard. You can make a 2.0L pipe work if you try.

a 2.4L is just as reliable as stock, only without AC and PS (depending on how much money you want to spend and what parts you chose).

i found a guy selling a set of 335 accel's and i'm wondering if the stock ecu can control them at idle without an aftermarket fpr?? will the addition of the safc be affect anything?? just checking on what my options are, any feedback is appreciated.
