91531, Venom 400 Actually Helped!
Posted by totaleclipse_05, Jul-16-05 10:11 AM
ok, me and a couple buddies went to this 1/8 mile strip close to our town and i figured i would test out my friend's venom thing we put on my car to see if it worked. to make a long story short, i did about 5-6 runs with the venom on and about 3 runs with it off (damn near ran out of gas, thats why stopped). on average, my 1/8 mile speed was 66.5 miles per hour at about 10.8 with the venom on and with it off my speed was 65 mph at about 11.3 (not bad for an intake and muffler i dont think). On all the time slips they were in the 66 mph range with it on and 65 with it off. i'll post my slips on here as soon as i get back from texas (leaving in about 20 min. and coming back on thursday or friday next week). everyone leave comments about this. i want to come back and see some discussion. later dudes

EDIT: Wish there was a 1/4 mile track nearby to see what it can do for those times.

Too many variables at the track to determine. I find it highly unlikely even with your 3 to 3 side by side runs that the Venom did anything for you however I do believe in "anything can happen".

ill add this to "the thing did nothing catagory"

this is stupid

As you said you almost ran outta gas, I attest the faster runs to lighter weight from less gas, lol.

Venom=useless

Well actually his faster times were before when he had a bunch of gas. But either way, I agree that the thing is crap.

Also.. the more and more you race, the more practice you get which equals better times.

Should have alternated in between runs to get a more accurate assumption; ie, on/off/on/off/on/off.

I think its funny how some people on here refuse to change their oppinions..... sadly im one of them.

I had one with a CAI and catback exhaust a while back. Nobody will believe me but i DID feel a slight difference on the but dyno. For example, when the AC was on it kinda felt like it wasnt (does that make sense?), and at higher speeds it seemed easier to get to even higher speeds.

But all in all, i wouldnt pay more than $10 for the 400 and i dont think anyone else should have to either. Im also convinced that its the cause of my hesitation because its done it ever since i had it on.

all it does is work like an afc. it changes map values. makes the car run a little leaner.

so then why wouldn't it produce more power?

It doesn't even do that. All it adjusts is the TPS signal. It never touches the MAP signal (though by altering the TPS it alters what cells it's using in the fuel tables).

wow. and they charge money for that?

I hate people who can't comprehend what the fuck they're reading. He got the worse times on his last runs with the Venom off.

It obviously made a difference, not much but probably as much as a CAI.

Anyway, I just wanted to give reading class.

I agree. People who lack a basic 8th grade reading comprehension level are very annoying. :thumbsup

However, I think that there are too many variables involved here for this to be any kind of "proof" that the Venom 400 does anything other than lighten your wallet and demonstrate a greater susceptibility to corporate propaganda. It's not like he's talking major differences between times. Things like the weight of the car as the fuel was depleted, the increase in underhood (and intake air) temps, and driver inconsistencies just throw too many little variables into the equation. It doesn't matter if he got slower or faster with it on or off, on his first runs or his last runs. Unless the car made a dyno run without and then with this thing to prove, more accurately, that it did a damn thing, I still call bullshit on this product.

I mean, I generally don't use what "everyone else is doing" as a basis of my argument, but in this case, if you've got something like 30,000 DSM enthusiasts in this country and only maybe 4 of them say this does anything, while everyone else agrees it's useless, I'd say it's a safe bet to call it crap.

It's almost embarrassing to see this in the Performance/Engine forum. :P

im in kansas right now. some hotel using the high speed link. about the performance section, yeah i had no idea what to put this in, but i just threw it in here. about the weight thing, wouldnt i go faster as the gas depleted? i had it off for the last 3-4 runs and i still went slower then when i had more gas and the venom on. i got the unit for free from my friend that had an eclipse 420a and he bought the car with it on there. he totaled the car so we put it on my car for the time being. i believe it did make a difference, if not much, but i would definitely agree its not worth the 3-4 hundred dollars they want for it brand new. wouldnt i get used to the track as i drove more and more? i only had it on when i first began and my first run was my worst with the venom on and it still beat the time of my best run with it off. i dunno, its a tossup. sure there are a lot of variables but im lookin at avg. times and they sure are off still. the times still seemed consistant on the venom on and off.

anyways, i liked the turnout on the responses. gave me somethin to read up on. ill be checkin back again in about a day or 2 when i get back to mn. thanks guys

If you look at the install manual, it does hook into the TPS and MAP wires. So, it could technically provide some sort of gain. Considering that it is non-adjustable and Venom likely has a legal and marketing department, I am willing to bet that it does not lean the fuel by much. The majority of its effect comes from increasing the TPS output at part throttle. Idle and WOT TPS values remain unchanged. The net effect is a car that feels faster, but doesn't really perform much different at full throttle. Remember that advertising dyno chart that looked like this:

Well, I took a little artistic liberties, but I'm close. The graph only showed an increase in power at part throttle. Nothing at WOT. That is all you need to know.

ill be posting my timeslips up later this week. i dont have a scanner here. its weird because it doesnt feel like its getting me any faster, but on my time slips it showed significant avg. times with the venom on and off and the speed was different on them too.

I think it's cool that someone actually tried a product that's caused such commotion.

At least he put it on, made passes, then took it off and made passes, to see what the output was.

Granted, it wasn't much, but the point is there was a gain. Even only 0.50 sec is a gain, going from 11.3 to 10.8 in the 1/8th mile will produce a more drastic difference in the 1/4 mile.

When I run my car, it gradually gets fast throughout the day. Even if I add fuel, it still gets faster.

I'm not saying I'm gonna go buy the product, but the point is he tried, and it showed an increase.

What time of day did you start running, and when did you stop?

it was between 8 and 10:30 at night and they had a thermometer set up and the temp stayed pretty steady. i switched off the venom at around 9:30-9:45 and kept it off for the duration of the races. after each race, i pulled up and let my car cool off (shut it off and hood open) so it stayed pretty cool with each pass.

If you're gonna get a Venom......just find somebody who's selling one and buy it. I would'nt pay full price for one, and bought my buddies for $100, but his was re-programmed when he was away at Utah Tech, so it does a little bit more than the normal ones. I could definatly tell a diference. He's got the 95 Talon, just turbo'd the 420.

I could understand if you started in the morning and it got hotter outside, it would cause the times to fluctuate. But, since it was at night, with a steady temp, it'll be more consistant.

I wouldn't pay $100 for it, free was a good price.

exactly, i would agree. it doesnt help that much to be worth the $300, but i dont think its a bad product. from what i have experienced, it has helped so im not gonna bash it.
