91387, Knocking Sound Posted by ifuonlyknew113, Jul-13-05 04:53 AM
Hey guys i drive a 99 rs auto eclipse with only 75k miles on it. But anyways yesterday while i was on my way home the car seemed to not have all the power that it normally has. Shortly after i could hear a clanking/banging noise coming from the engine. Two of my friends and I took the valve cover off and everything looked fine. No service engine soon light came on. No warnings of any kind actually. It definitely sounds internal and serious. Does anybody have any info on what this could be? Here is a link that my friend put in his forum of the sound. Doesn't sound too accurate though. Its a quicktime file.

the sound clip didnt work for me, but you could have spun a bearing or two. hows your oil level? does the knock sound increase as you rev it up higher or what? is your car stock? give us some more info..

The knock increases as i rev higher. As I let go of the gas the knocking stops for a second then starts knocking again. The car is stock. It makes the sound in neutral and park and even when i drive. My friend says the engine has a lope. I don't know what all i can tell you guys to say so just keep asking for info. Oh try to save the file and play through quicktime.

You spun a bearing. Drop the oilpan and look for metal debris and blueing on a rod end.

Definitley, Pay more attention to your oil. You will need a rebuild or a remanufactured 420a

Ok so it sounds like i am going to have to get an engine swap... What about putting the 4g63t engine in my car? I know the mounts aren't the same but is there a kit?

thedawg makes one. PM him. Repeatedly. You can even harass him on AIM and on the 2GNT chat.
It's the leetest swap evar. i put three 4g63's in my car, for the added badassness.

i can attest to the complete and total l337nicity of the aforementioned 4g63 Swap, Engine And Resolving Components Helper device that is hawked by most knowledgable people on this site (now you know why they tell you to SEARCH, right?), the SEARCH is a great tool, from flamethrower exhausts to 4g63 swaps, the SEARCH is the best way to git 'er done!

1 under the hood for the front wheels. 1 in hatch to drive the rear wheels. and 1 in place of the passenger seat, to run all the accesories and sunroof motor. You will probably lose your cupholder and glovebox though so be really, really sure you want to do this mod.

Alright dude look, the 4g63 swap does not work for our cars unless you just have an unlimitless supply of money in which it would be cheaper to sell your car and buy a GST or GSX. Now, there are plenty of places to purchase rebuild kits and a couple that sell short blocks or long blocks, it just all depends on your knowledge and finances. This site has a huge wealth of information, and an easy way to exploit that is the SEARCH button. I have only been in the 2gnt community for a little over a year or so, and I've had tons of questions, but just about all of them were solved without me ever posting, just searching. I've also seen that same question asked dozens and dozens of times, now imagine what its like for guys that have been here since these cars first came out, everytime I hear it asked "can I swap a 4g63?" my head hits the keyboard, and look forward to an entertaining read. But dont let it get ya down man, its all in fun. Well, good luck, hope I've cleared it up a bit.

Nah guys I'm still here. I have just been "searching" in this great place of knowlegde looking for parts and what not. I appreciate the post. They have been pretty good. Even my friends are dogging me here because of you guys. I know now not to ask questions unless i search first and i have learned I don't need to get the 4g63... just the 420a with a turbo kit.

I read it in one of the other post. And that is the conclusion that they came to. the title was "A588 same as 420A?????" Oh c'mon guys i know i'm new at this but give me a break. I'm in the military and i need a new engine fast.

91457, RE: Knocking Sound Posted by CustomGS, Jul-14-05 07:26 AM
Alright, Sorry I realize you did the right thing and searched, But you were unfortunate enough to find another stupid n3wbie post from back in the day.-
Your only option is to replace your 420a( the only engine that fits in our cars) or rebuild it. Look in our Sale/Wanted section on this site. I know there have been a few complete 420a's for sale in the last couple months.

Ok so here is another question. I have been trying to get ahold of the auto zone and pep boys around this area but they are always busy. Do any of you guys know about there crate motors? I am honestly not looking on the used side of the engines. I was told by my bosses to get a new engine so this doesn't happen again.

91459, RE: Knocking Sound Posted by BlackMagic, Jul-14-05 07:50 AM
if you get a used engine and rebuild it, it's basically a new engine

It sounds like it all depends on how much downtime and convinience he is looking for. Locating, shipping, and machining a used shortblock adds time to the equation. Ryan is selling a complete 420a in the forsale forum. perfect condition.

91462, RE: Knocking Sound Posted by ifuonlyknew113, Jul-14-05 08:09 AM
does Ryan have an email address? I have found so many post about selling there engines and I am new so i don't know which to trust and what to do about buying all this from people over this website...

Mitsubishi Does still sell Remanufactured chrysler 420a's. I had one put in under warranty 4 months ago. Thats worst case scenario- it would run you about 1600. Your are def. better off rebuilding Je's and Eagles if your going to turbo down the line.
