91381, Will Test Pipe make a Ricer Sound?
Posted by Jem09, Jul-13-05 01:35 AM
Peace,
I'm new to the forum, this is actually the first forum I've joined period. But onto the point of the post.

My question is regarding the way a test pipe may cause my exhaust system to sound after installation. I've read posts that state their's no point in installing a test pipe on a N/A Eclipse (I have a 97' RS), that a Cat. Converter will do. But I personally agree with those that stated, better air flow, regardless, is better than having a Cat. Converter installed. So after reading that I decided I want to go with the Test Pipe. I know the test pipe is going to make the system sound Louder, but will it sound like so many of the "Fast and Furious" Ricin' Hondas out there that make that High Pitched Sound during hard acceleration??? If so, I'll go with the Cat. Converter. My exhaust will consist of DC Sports headers down to 3" piping to either the 3" TP or C.Converter, ending it with a Magnaflow Muffler with a 3" inlet. I appreciate all the comments and opinions.

Yes, it will sound like hell. You may want to look for a resonated test pipe, it will help but it will most likely still sound ricey.

I get muscle car heads saying my exhaust sounds great, it's a resonated testpipe w/ a Greddy EVO catback.

If you have 3" and no resonators it will sound really riced out. In fact you should change your name to Mr. McRicerson if you don't put any resonators in there. Believe me I tried it! I now have 2 resonators and some ebay muff and it now sounds really nice. I don't have a "test pipe", mine is straight thru 3" from about 10 inches off the turbo back to the ass of my car.

Peace fellas. Thank you for your comments and opinions. I truly DON'T want that Ricin' Sound coming out my Eclipse. Would anyone know where I can get an official 3" Resonator? If the sound still sounds lame, I'll swap the resonator out for the Cat. Convertor. Once again fellas, THANK YOU! I look foward to building/learning more with heads like you in the future.

After thinking about it, will the Resonator restrict air flow much, compared to a reg. TP? If so, how much more?

considering you are putting a 3" exhaust on a non-turbo RS with a header, your car is goin to be really loud no matter what you do, and you have a lot of air flow to spare. put on the resonator.

The guys in this thread saying that their exhausts sound good also have this cool modification done to their exhaust systems that uses tiny blades spinning at upwards of 100,000rpm to interfere with the soundwaves resulting from the combustion event. They're called turbos. The sweetest exhaust I have ever heard on a 2GNT is a high-flow cat installed on a stock exhaust system with a Magnaflow univeral, offest muffler on the end of it. If a Greddy Evo sounds like sex, this exhaust sounds like Taylor Rain taking a pounding in the ass. Only thing is, you have to run the exhaust through a S16G turbine before it will sound good. I, personally, have a 33" long, 2.5" ID Cherry Bomb resonator where my cat once was, directly off the Pacesetter 4-2-1 header, into stock piping, into nearly the same Magnaflow and it's the loudest, most annoying, likely-to-make-your-ears-bleed exhaust in the world short of no exhaust at all. I've personally made the creator of this website, Juan, roll his eyes in disgust when I bounced her off the rev limiter in the parking lot at MOD back in April.

Turbo will make any exhaust sound sweet. Removing the cat will add a definite rasp to your exhaust. That's the annoying buzz that you're wanting to avoid. If you're really that concerned about the flow, go to RRE's website and look into getting a hi-flow cat from them. Measure the length of yours, pick your ID and order. It's the only thing I can think of that will reduce the riciness (is that even a word?). :wary

It is now. :7

Yeah, turbos make the exhaust sound nicer. Resonators do not restrict air flow at all, take a look at one! The ID on the inlet is hollow all the way through the unit. No restriction at all, and a 2.5" can be had for about $30.

I will have to say my car sounds more ricey with the RFL blow off valve than any other thing on it :(. DR is right, with the turbo in the way it tones down the exhaust note quite a bit. Without a turbo it would be.....unbearable to say the least. Go for the high flow cat and a couple of resonators. It will still be loud but it will at least not sound like a swarm of yellow jackets.

a little off topic, but right now i just have a aftermarket muffler in place of the stock muffler on my eclipse. it has a nice tone to it right now, but i was wondering what it would sound like if i took the resonator out. would it sound ricey? i have a stock cat still and no headers or anything (saving for turbo). any help is appreciated.

it will get louder, that's all I can say for sure... you might also get more of a farty sound. personally I like the sound of my Ractive catback, but my buddys' turbocharged cars still sound 10,000 times better.

Yes. Without some sort of turbo hanging off your head then your exhaust will sounds like complete ass. Well, maybe not to your local "enthusiasts" hanging out in the local parking lot but you get the idea.

w/ DC headers, an exhaust, and no CAT...do you have to floor it in first gear to start movin? lol...our low end torque is horrible stock and all 3 of those make it a hell of a lot worse..i hate how mine is now and i have a CAI which helps low end a tiny i guess, and just a muffler lol

i have turbo and the apexi 3" N1 and it does sound super duper sweet. I've been wanting a testpipe too, so i guess i really don't have to worry about ricy sounds right? I know turbo definitely tones down the sound, i just don't want any farting coming out of my can....hehe.

I have the Greddy 2.5" evo catback, and just recently it makes that fart noise. I've had it for like 2 years. Any idea what could be causing it? It only does it for the first couple of minutes of running the car and then it goes away, but I don't want it at all and it could get worse. :whoa

thats the way my car is too, only when it warms up and drive for a lil bit it goes away. anyone hear about those tsudo n1 exhausts? i hear good things about them, but its so cheap (as in price as i know) that its kind of hard to believe. anyone know?

check for exhaust leaks. Metal expands when hot and contracts when cold.

look at the one pic in my sig. thats my exhaust coming out of my front bumper there. straight pipe right off the turbo no cat no muffler or nothing. and it really does not sound loud or ricey at all . the only thing i hear is the constant cyclic sound of the turbo .. its def not loud as some all motor cars with just exhaust.. turbos really quiet things down.

I'm not sure of the brand of kit, but my buddy turbo'd his talon and it actually quieted his exhuast down a little. sounds great though. I'm running a Chikara 4-2-1 header to a magnaflow hi-flow to 2.5 all the way back to a Magnaflow street series muffler and it sounds pretty decent, i think. I've always been told to stay away from cheapey mufflers to avoid too horrible of a "rice" sound.

one thing you have to take into consideration is that anybody who doesn't understand the import culture and has never looked into it is going to think any hopped up import whether its a 1500 hp Supra, Skyline or Civic or Eclipse is/sounds "ricey".

which brings another think to mind.....does a jacked up chevy/ford with straight pipes, cherry bombs and no muffler qualify as "hicked up" or "Hickey"?

I just refer to those as 'redneck'. I've heard a few mustangs that have that 'redneck' sound to them :thumbsdown

If you wanna know what a header, downpipe, testpipe and a 2.5" catback sounds on a NA car....

Just ask WickedESi or Gorkoracing. I ran it on my car for a bit. I hated driving next 18 wheelers, concrete barriers, or under bridges. Dave41079 also heard it and made fun of me for about 30minutes as we drove around Huntsville. I took it off the next day. This is with all 2.5" piping. 3" is overkill, will slow your car down, and is gonna sound like and old logging truck.

I have a resonated test pipe and a Tsudo exhaust, I have seen a my car run fast at higher rpm, and I love the sound too. I dont know my be my SAFC2 help out a bit there. But if you ask me I would say to get a resonated test pipe. I just cant wait to see what I am running after I drop my star stage2 with it :)
