I think each engine has it's strong points you just have to know how to find them and tune them. The problem with most V-Tec owners is they think they are bad ass because they have it but when you ask them what V-Tec stands for and does 9 out of 10 times the person is speechless and then starts to make up some bullshit about what he think it really does. If your going to tune an engine you gotta know what it's doing first. It's easy for anybody to put on a CAI and say they have V-Tec but do they really understand what it does?

VTEC is only good for top end. That's what I hate, I leave every VTEC in my dust off the line usually. Then they beat me witht he 8k redlines or higher. I respect it, but it needs more torque.

Well if you have a v6 with vtec, you have both low end and high end. I always could feel vtec on my mom's v6 accord, but over the weekend, I revved it high up a STEEP hill, and you could just feel it just jolt and pull a lot stronger once it went over 4800 rpms. I think any v6 feels a lot funner to drive, just because of all the extra torque. Or a turbo i4 with a lot of torque also pulls crazy...

this guy i went to school with had a mustang and then got a 2door accord. i was like, "is it a 4-cylinder?" and he goes "yeah, buts its a v-tech." im thinking to myself, "why is it that all honda owners think v-tech is so special? i mean, its on like every car and its only good at 5500-7000rpms."(or something in that range im not really sure)

I have been in a 2000 prelude SH and at about 5500 rpm you can feel it pull harder than normal. Its kinda like a miny turbo feeling but much later in the rpm range and much weaker than my mighty 16g. V-TEC is no match for a turboed 420a (unless its a GS-R engine in a civic hatch). I hate those things.

sorry, i messed up... wasn't thinking straight when i typed out the poll. it should be VTEC... not v-tec

I was thinking about the new i-VTEC's that were coming out and it just confused me.

And from what i know about VTEC.. it stands for Variable Timing Engine Control... and it's basically a camshaft design so that power is gained at a more constant level... something about... how engines have two camshafts... one for low rpms.. and one for high rpms.. and the vtec makes the mid rpm range more useful.

SOMETHING like that... heh.. all my friends are honda/acura freaks. Since I just dared to be different, i hardly retain anything they talk about. =P

Anyone wants to clearify, be my guest.

Nope you got it right pretty much to all of my knowledge.

Each cam shaft has lobes for the low end and then at 5700rpm the vtec solenoid causes the other lobes to be used which have a higher lift and duration. The only reason for it is to keep the gas mileage like honda is known for. It's also easier to drive a car with a mild cam than a high lift and duration cam than causes a lumpy idle and not much low end but the power power up top. V-tec has both on one cam. The Vtec will get you up top but we do have them of the line no problem. I raced an SI at the track and I killed him off the line and once I hit 3rd gear his 2nd was topping out and he passed me and he beat by a car length in 3rd gear. The best thing to do if you are N/A and want to beat a V-TEC, get a powerful billet cam then you will have that higher lift and duration they only have at the top end and you can smoke them. }>

You got me interested in looking up vtec, and did you guys know there is a Type R with the RSX body now in Japan? I had no idea....it's 220 hp now instead of 200.

>>>The Type R can do 0-60 in around 6 seconds flat, which matches the likes of Nissan Silvia turbo and Fiat Coupe turbo. However, the way to exploit its performance is very different from those turbocharged rivals. It is best to use the whole rev-range by working closely with your best companion - the new, close-ratio 6-speed gearbox, whose short-throw shift is slick and light.

VTEC=variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic control. there a computer that gets informataion on engine speed and fuel mixture here i have links to tell you how VTEC and VVTLI and all those things work. it's actually called oil pressure regualted cam advancement. I-VTEC is the same as vtec except it has a thrib cam lobe there's low medium and high. low is good from idle to 3k medium is from 3-6k and the third kicks in at 6 to 8200(redline). supposively the third lobe makes so much power on the rsx's that if you shift at rredilne it won't rev below 6 g's keeping you in that high cam lobe. i posted this stuff earlier in a thread called "know your enemy"

what about vtec plus turbo? I know this one civic hatchback that has a gsr b18c motor, plus a turbo kit. That thing must be fast! The cool thing about vtec is that you can buy those electronic modules that adjust the switchover point of vtec, so if you are freeway racing, can't you just set the switchover lower so no matter what you are always using vtec?

yea, i was up at my local import store checkin it out and they had advanced VTEC control modules and that kinda ish. so yea you can change when it kicks in.

you can't do very drastic adjustments as far as i'm concerned but it does help. I like it when they try to act cool saying "i hit lift, and i won" :)
