91127, I think i have a problem....lol Posted by Brandon005, Jul-04-05 08:44 AM
ok when replacing my headgasket i took off the crank pulley and when i did the 3 jaw puller bolt thing wasn't long enough so i put the pulley bolt back in turned it a couple of rounds then pulled off of that didn't think any more of it until i go to put it back on I think i damaged some of the threads in the bolt hole :wallbash so now what will that pulley stay on without that bolt? I had to beat the hell out of it with a hammer to get it back on any ideas on what to do :shrug

i remember a post about this awhile ago, same thing hapened to another guy and he just got a slightly shorter bolt and retapped the threads and he was fine. try that. your gear will probably move around a litle bit if that bolt isnt putting any tension on it.

next time try heating the pulley up before installing it, usually pops right on with a little struggle but not like what your saying!

I broke the bolt off in my crank, but had about 1.5" of threads left. We taped it and used a slightly larger bolt. I've had no problems. You will probably have to drill the whole in the pulley. You didn't break the bolt did you? If you didnt, I would just run the stock bolt sized tap in and see how well the stock bolt goes in.

I forgot to add the crank pulley is threaded... so you will need to grind/remove the top threads on the new bolt you are using, if you do you come to use a new one.

if you pulled off the bolt then you damahed the first 5 or so threads. get a tap and just retap the threads to clean them up. no need to drill larger.
For future go get a real long bolt with the same threads and use that to install the pully like it is supposed to be installed. If you want to just buy a tool then order the tool from the dealer or any reputable tool manufacturer. look in the manual for details.
I am tired of seeing people use the crank pully bolt to pull the pully on and cross-thread the crank. If you do that then you deserve a broken bolt.
If you have a bolt 3 inches longer that the factory bolt you can thread it in enough to pull against it when you have to remove the pully in the future.
If you would like me to make you one shoot me a PM

my stock pulley is threaded. i dont remeber if i tapped the whole with the pulley on or not, but i don't think i did.

As stated above the stock pully is not threaded unless you or someone else threaded it a larger size. this is common sense why a threaded pully would not work. you would either not get the pully all the weay on or strip the pully as your tightening it. I suggest you take a picture and post it if you actually believe yours is. Its not

It certainly is, and I don't understand why I would have tapped the whole with the pulley on, I'm guessing it was my fathers bright idea. but I guess I did. The pulley being stock threaded certainly doesn't make sense. It has been so long though, that I do not remeber. I just remeber removing the top threads off of the bolt we were using so the bolt would not thread into the pulley.

you drilled your crank out didnt you? thats why it is tapped. I can guess why you tapped it with the pully on......the pully was prolly half way on and you could put a puller on it to get it off since there was no bolt to pull against. you can see how the threads on the pully are nut complete, they look partially stripped, poss from using a larger bolt and the threads binding in it.
The factory pully does not have threads.
