91009, 2.0L to 2.4L swap Posted by the_repo_man, Jun-28-05 01:22 PM
Hello! I am new to this forum and need help with my fiance's '99 Eclipse. Keep in mind I know very little about her car. Her '99 is a NT GS with a 2.0L mated to a 5-speed manual trans. She ran the car low on oil, and blew it up. So........I have a co-worker who is parting out a '98 Stratus with the 2.4L and an automatic trans. My questions are.......will the 2.4L work in the Eclipse? Will the engine bolt up to the manual trans? How big of a headache would this give me in order to make it work? What would have to be change/fabricated in order to make the swap? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site.
They're almost identical, but there are several differences. The 2.4 is a little taller, has a bigger(different) oil pan, balance shafts. And yes, a couple of things need to be fabricated to bolt it in - like a motor mount and some accessory bracketry. Its definately not a direct swap.
A couple of people have done it. James is right, there's plenty of information on here about doing it. Try searching for "2.4" or "2.4 swap" in the General and Performance sections.

personally, I say go for it. having a 2.4 is great for bragging rights, but it is not a bolt-in sort of project.

if you have any specific questions you can pm me, i'm right in the middle of this ordeal and i'm using a 98 stratus block. hoping to be done in the next couple weeks. just to let ya know though, this isn't the normal honda-swap, there is some custom fabrication involved. shouldn't be too difficult if you know what you're doing. the passenger mount will be a pain in the ass. good luck to you, you'll be one of the few...chris

I need to speak to you about this swap. Do these 2 engines swap well or not. Is the 2.4 engine from a stratus a swap worth doing and what else is necessary to complete it. Gearracing@gmail.com

you're kidding right? good to see you used the search to find this two year old thread, now use it to find the hundred other threads on this topic in the advanced tuning section, hell I think there's a sticky specifically for 2.4 related info.
edit, no sticky, but there's at least 10 threads about the 2.4 on the first page of the advanced tuning question. Start reading them b/c asking someone to send you answers via email is not the way to gain respect on this board. I'm locking this b/c well it's 2 years old and we don't need more people telling you that.
