For some time now I have been smelling gas fumes on the inside of my car and especailly strong when I am driving with the windows down. It's seemed to have gotten worse over time. I took to it the dealer to have it checked out and they could not explain it. I recently noticed when I was filling up, that when I removed the gas cap there was no sound of pressure so, it's got to be a leak somewhere. I just hope someone else has experienced this and came up with a diagnosis. It does not seem to be coming from under the hood.

yes you have a gas leak I'd bet. You better find it too, check all your fuel hoses. when I did my turbo fuel upgrade I drove it on the freeway and I smelled gas. Shit I smelled so much gas in the next 2 mins that I was practically choking. I pull over the next stop I find and I open my hood, haha this geyser of fuel comes spewing out, OMG I was freaking out, I thought the car was gonna blow up or some shit because there was fuel all over the engine bay. Found out there was a slit in the fuel hose I used to do the upgrade, BUY brand new hoses haha, don't use some cheappy ass one you find around the house like me. I lost half a tank that day through that damn hose.

So check fuel hoses!

Check under your rear seat. It might be there.

I know a while back there was a recall(possibly a TSB) regarding leaking gas tanks (maybe in 95?). It also might be the fitting at the fuel pump assembly.

Either way, see if the smell is stronger under your back seat.

NTSB and recall states that 95 are covered for this prob with the tank and fumes I get them real bad now and then, but SATAN says the recall doesnt exist and so did MITSI (one in the same??) so i filed a complaint with the NTSB and they said if enough owners complained that the mfg. might include the affected vehicles under the recall.(i.e. new tank,gaskets and fuel pump)

my friend has a 97 RS he found a crimp on the gas line that goes to the tank.... when the gas sloshed around in thetank it flew up and came out the tube... so check out the fuel line going to the tank i hope that helps let us know if you find anything wrong

I had a similar problem with gas fumes... It turned out that my EVAP solenoid broke. The EVAP system is part of the emmissions stuff which catches gas fumes from the gas tank. The solenoid controls when fumes enter the EVAP canister. It is basically a flapper valve made of rubber. Mine deteriorated over time and gas fumes were allowed to flow through the solenoid freely. Usually a CEL light will come on when the solenoid is not working right, but mine did not. It was like $140 to replace it. The evap system is located in the passenger front bumper. There are also many vacuum lines there as well. Including one vacuum line that carries gas fumes into the intake plenum from the evap canistor. You might want to check that as well.

maybe u put too much gas in? Maybe it clicked off when u hit like $12.01? Gas will overflow and cause it to smell a while. I personally like the smell of gas from a distance.Dunno why, but I kinda do. I don't wanna huff the shit tho.

If you upgraded your fuel pump I guarente thats the problem, try filling the car up and going really fast making a sharp left turn into a parking spot. then quickly look under the car for leaking gas, mine had the same problem the damn fuel tank enlosure wont seal. I still dont know how to fix it.

6 years old. pretty sure he has fixed it by now.

oops, sorry I was looking around to see if anyone had the same problem and didnt pay attention to the date.

check the injector o-rings. From time to time the seals can crack and fuel can leak out between the seal between the intake mainfold and the fuel rail.
