Its not mine but a friends who has a 95 eclipse rs and no net access.OK He noticed the tapping on the way home from the airport and stayed the same through and had to limp it home for 30 miles. It sounds like lifter tap (coffee can tap sound). We just hooked up a oil pressure gauge,it has 50 psi at idle and we just chenged the oil.Any ideas on where or what else to check?

My friend's 95 rs had a similar sound kinda up top and sounded hollow. We replaced his lifters and has never been heard again.

You may have spun a rod bearing by running low on oil in which case you will need to have the engine rebuilt. This is a very common failure for 2gnts. Of course it could be a hundred different things, but you will need to ask a mechanic that can actually hear the noise to tell.

Cut open the oil filter you just removed and look for ANY metal flakes or specks.

Using the word "limp" instead of "annoying" leads me to believe its a spun bearing, not a noisy lifter.

Yeah either a bearing or lifter. pull the valve cover off and take a look alot of times they will crack.

Lifter tap and rod berings sound simular at first but normally rod bearings dont tap as fast as lifters. Also he has 60 psi idle and rises with rpm.But they are the factory lifters on a 95 eclipse. I was just wanting to know if anybody had any simular experiance with noise starting on a drive and if there was anything else of the cause like a cloged oil line to the head being the problem or just lifter failure?

Grab a stethoscope and listen to the top of the motor while it's running, then to the bottom. Where ever the knocking is louder will tell you if it's your top or bottom end. It's sometimes hard to do by ear but some people can do it.
