This may be a shot in the Dark, but does anyone know a good place in the nashville area that will do Port work? IF not, Does anyone know of a shop that will let me ship it to them and does good work?

I did search the forums for inforamtion regarding this but I am unable to find JAcK.

I have recently bought a truck and now consider my eclipse to be a race/show only vehicle. The short term plan is to see what I can learn about turbo from light amounts of pressure using stock bottom end. The long term goal of course is to blow every penny I can on the best parts I can and hope not to phuck it up in the process.

For now I want to Port intake manifold and head. Any other Suggestions? THanks for all your opinions and suggestions.

I can ask the guy that did my machine work for me. I'm in Nashville. He does exceptional work and he does all of the machine work for Toyota and a couple of other dealerships around here. Let me know and I'll try and find his #

702-1989 That's his pager #. His name is Danny and he is pretty good about calling you back. Again, he does excellent work and it's reasonably priced. Just tell him Roman at Rivergate toyota sent you.

Why don't you try to port it out your self? Just get a good set of carbide bits for alum and be easy and careful And you will have the bride of knowing you did it your self.

do it yourself. Get a die grinder or dremel with carbide cutting bits, trace/map out the size, do the same size on the intake manifold and exhaust manifold, get some sanding bits to polish with. Depending on your resources (i have a 60-gal compressor) you will spend 30$ - $80-90$.

seriously, for 450$ you could damn near get a set of cams or something that will actually make a good bit of HP.

Alright then I'll do it. I have a spare head and am going to tackle one side or the other. Which should I start on since IM a beginner? Any other tips would be great. Has anyone done a write up on this? If not, and if I do a good Job, I'll probably do a write up, so any tips would be great.

Thanks

I figure since I cant stop fixing the damn thing, I'll just create more problems to work on. :) The stock pile has begun. Parts PArts PARts PARTs PARTS!!!
I'm a novice listen to what I say and make your own conclusion. If I'm wrong tell me and I will learn. Thanks be to the 2gnt Gods may they grant me turbo and fruits of the Earth. Amen.

WHOA!! Don't do that. Let somebody that knows what they are doing do the work for you. 450 is not a bad price for a good p&p. Especially from him because he definatley knows what he's doing. I know it's just a spare head, but you could just have him do that one for you and you wouldn't have any downtime. Then, you could turn around and sell your head on here or even egay and make some of your money back.

You should def. still do it yourself 450$ is way to much to spend on something that will net you very very small gains, if you do it yourself and do it wrong it still shouldnt affect the performance. You could do most of a turbo setup for the 450$.

what you should do: decide how much material you want to remove (make sure you will not be hitting any water/oil jackets.

make a single template to scribe the lines from -onto the intake/exhaust make only ONE for all intake ports and ONE for exhaust ports. This will ensure that everything turns out the same size. Make sure you get the size as similar as possible.

I've ported things before, make sure you use a sharp bit and go very slowly, it's easy for that thing to get away from you.

EDIT: I just want to clarify what I mean by a single template, say you have a spare intake manifold gasket, cut ONE port off of it, cut it to the size you want and use that for all 8 intake ports (manifold and head).

Wow... please do not follow this advise. If you do it yourself and do wrong you WILL adversely effect performance. You can change the flow characteristics of the head and create an assload of reversion, the engine will be fighting itself to pull air in, or on the exhaust side the pressure wave will push exhaust back into the combustion chamber. port the head too far and you loose all low end power and push the power band above what your engine/cams can actually flow, and you've created a head that wants 10,000rpm to flow air efficiently, and need high lift, long duration cams. Or you port right into a water jacket and screw yourself having to get someone to tig weld more aluminum into the head, or buy another one. Bigger ports are not better ports, properly shaped port and properly textured ports will help you.

You are far better off on a stock head than a head that has been ported badly. You can very easily do more damage than good as far as head work is concerned.

Go that way, really fast, if something gets in your way... turn.

Thanks for everyones responses. I found someone who will do the exhaust side as well as race valve job (will get more details next time I talk to him) and resurface for 400. That is the route I will probably go. I might sand the inside of the Intake side to give it a polish(I am assuming that will flow at least a little better) but thats all i will be able to afford for now.
