90173, urgent daily driver fix for broke college kid

below 3000 rpm or so in my 95 auto talon esi i get almost no acceleration whatsoever. it feels as if the engine is running on two cylinders and sounds like that too. but above 3000 it runs as smoothely as it could. it does this more with the ac turned on and starting out in reverse can make my revs drop to around 200 for a second or so.

my car was already slow enough but just sporty enough to enjoy it a bit cause it's comfortable and right now i don't have the funds for a new car yet. i drive about 50-75 miles a day and my car is a necessity. i've talked to lots of people and they all list simple solutions like spark plugs, wires, cat. converter, injectors, fuel filter, fuel pump, general lack of compression from worn cylinders etc. but i don't have the money for a full tune up and won't for a couple weeks, so i need more specific help for free. if any solutions are below around 50 bucks i'll get on it tomorrow.

sorry for the rant, long day trying to fix my passenger window that hangs up and hits against the inside of the door when you try to roll it up. that and it's love for a quart of oil each week or so is about to drive me crazy.

thanks for any help.

Have you ever changed the fuel filter?

Judging by your handle and your setup, you mean 12 seconds to get in and start the car, right? Right?

OMG LOLERS

But yea, those fixes people have told you are fairly important.

By the sound of it you don't have the skill or knowledge to do a tuneup yourself so you should take it to a mechanic. I mean, $50 to fix your car that could have bad wires, crappy fuel filter, low compression, old spark plugs, dirty air filter or a clogged cat isn't going to get you far.

If you say it burns a quart of oil a week it's probably something in your bottom end ie: rings are worn.

I'd goto autozone, buy a chiltons manual and a compression tester (there goes your $50) and read and do a compression test.

The next best thing is a leakdown test which will tell you more where the problem lyes. Ie: valve sticking, rings n whatnot.

i'm no car genius but i know it needs a major tune up. it's not even that i couldn't do some of it myself, it's just that i needed a quick fix because i figured my dad wouldn't give in on taking it somewhere cause he's old and cranky and refused to believe anything was wrong with it in the first place. but somehow he gave in and in about 7 hours i'll drop her off and hopefully everything will be back to normal.

Um yea it must be the bottom end if you are losing oil. :rolleyes
Blizar, quit sniffing glue or taking stupid pills every morning.

First off if you are have a problem in lower rpm's but 3000+ is fine than your spark plug wires and plugs are shot. if you pull the plug wires out you will prolly see white spots on the boot near the spark plug. you may get away with plug wires only for now. you can do them yourself and will only cost you about 20.00. Thats 2 days of eating at youre local college burger shack.

Not a catlytic converter, that would get worst over 3000 rpm's.

Its not the fuel filter because that has the opposite effect. poor top end and leaning out up top would be the filter.

Who in the hell told you it could be a fuel filter/fuel pump/ or cat, do not listen to that person again! Think about it, at higher RPM's the motor needs more fuel and releases more exhaust. you said your car is fine over 3000rpm's.

Leaking oil could be the damn infamous head gasket which is not a worry for you right now since you cant do the work yourself, you will just have to keep adding oil. any oil spots below it when it sits?
