90021, car shut off and won't start
Posted by jwhit, May-30-05 09:31 AM
I have just put about 2500 miles in a newly rebuilt engine in my 96 talon. The other day I am driving down the interstate and the car just dies and will not restart, it just turns over. I have checked the input and output voltage on all the critical sensors( cam pos, crank pos, map, and tps. I am getting fuel pressure and spark. I have checked the asd relay and checked for injector pulse. I have checked compression and timing and everything else I can think of. I have checked for shorted wires and loose connections and blown fuses also. The only other thing I can think of is a bad ecu. Does anybody else have an idea of what could cause this. also, sometimes while turning over it will backfire a little bit through the intake manifold. Please help, I need to sell this car and I am getting really pissed

are you sure the timing is correct? If fuel and spark are there, correct timing is what is missing.

a backfire threw the intake mani is a faulty/bent/sticky valve....if u had em replaced it doesnt mean that its not the prob.

The valves are farrea and I have crane valve springs and retainers. If there was a stuck valve wouldnt that cylinder have 0 compression. the compression is fine and the timing is fine. the car ran perfect for 2500 miles then just died. If it was a stuck valve wouldnt the motor at least try to start, it does nothing, just turns over and over. It has only done the backfire thing twice I believe after trying to start it for days. I am not trying to dispute you because I know you know your shit, but I dont think a bent valve is the problem( I will check that out though) and I am getting very frustrated. What do you think about the possibility of a bad ecu?
