89585, What sensor is this?
Posted by bzoss, May-18-05 03:03 PM
There is a sensor that is directly above and to the left of the oil filter, what is it and what does it do?

I believe that is where I have oil leaking from, and at a substantial rate at that. It is hard to tell for sure that is where the oil is coming from, but I figure if I knew what that sensor was, and what it did it would help me figure out whether or not that is where my oil could be leaking from.

thanks for the help

Well, its been a while since I had my 2gnt, but if its by the oil filter I'd have to bet its the oil pressure sending unit. Then again, I thought that was on the back of the block?

Crank position sensor.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit is on the upper portion of the block on the drivers side.

thats your crank angle sensor, its held in by 1 10mm bolt and the ECU uses it to determine where pistons are for its ignition, and fuel maps.

it has an o-ring around it, you can either replace the o-ring...or the sensor. depending if its just a leak, or a faulty sensor.

there are three sensors on the back of the block. Drivers side is the oil pressure sending unit, then in the middle is the knock sensor, and the passenger side above the oil filter is the crank position sensor.

I thought I've read we didn't have a knock sensor. Guess I missunderstood.

Then it is possible for oil to be leaking from there??

To be honest with you, I don't remember putting an O-ring there... Hopefully that is all I need to do, I really hope that I didn't screw something up. I am getting really tired of all the irratating small things that are going wrong with this re-build.

thanks for the help

Yes, there is knock sensor .... and yes, oil can leak from any of the three on the back of the block.

Uhh.. since when does the knock sensor sit in an oil galley? That's completely incorrect.

I found the leak, it is actually the cam shaft seals leaking down the inside of the timing cover, then down the side of the engine..
in any case, thanks for the help, and at least I know what sensor that is now.

Its back to pulling that damn motor out for me it sounds like.

I appreciate the help.
