89516, More about engine machine work
Posted by gilee_8, May-17-05 10:52 AM
I want to mention this,
Overbore.com contacted my friend and said.
$2100 for full bottom end rebuild.
Where my friend will provide all parts (howell bottom end kit)

So $2100 is just machine work including assemblying the short block.
Not installing the engine thou, just machine the block, etc, and assemble the parts into it.

Includes:
balancing (he said down to 0grams)
Bore and hone .02
clean
assemble
regrind crank journal
etc etc etc

They keep saying they do EXCEPTIONAL good job, and since that engine is for RACING uses, it will be in excellent shape!

They also said .5gram balancing is standard, where grandma and pa drive to shopping uses. so he said 0gram is what they do.

what you think of the price, the company and so on?

Thankd for the input!
Gil

i dunno that seems like a lot, all my machine work costs $430 dollars, unless that price includes the bottom end kit from howell than i think it's too much

Hi, I updated the above a little to give it more detail.
But no... $2100 is JUST what he charges, my friend will includes the howell bottom end long rod kit.

So WTF... is it crazy?

And what you guys think about what he said? 0Gram, etc...

Yes, that's fucking crazy. Look in your local phone book for engine machining and balancing companies. My last build cost me $230 in machine work and I did the assembly myself.

Yeah, you can get it down to 0 grams and with that bottom end kit, you'd probably want to get it as close as possible. But any really good machine shop can do that for you. Make your machinist your best friend.....let him know EXACTLY what you got and what you want done.
I think they're pretty high myself. For that kind of money, I know several people that would probably do it....myself included.

I've done 3 of these 420A's....had no idea such work was so valuable. :scratch

OK, so he is insane.
But did any of you heard of overbore.com?

anyone tried it?
89552, RE: More about engine machine work

No one would try it for that much. Most people, if they're not assembling it themselves, sends it to a local shop to do it for them, not an online shop.

Fuck That Place.. You Live In NY? I would just take it to Concept Illusions in PA. They are some really decent guys and know alot about the 420A as they are a member here. I would just take it to them and have them work on it, If I ever get the money for an engine rebuild thats where I'm taking my car.

Hi Guys, as for the 2100.00 maybe you should get the entire conversation not just a spec of it. here is the final quote,
balance 255.00 if heavy metal is needed this is additional
assemble and spec 375.00
test short block 250.00 optional
bore and hone with all plates 300.00 w/o plates 140.00
wash, clean, tap, steel shot blast, crack check, install brass plugs, tap oil galley holes in block for pipe plugs 250.00
line hone mains 175.00
index grind crank 225.00 std grind-125.00
deck block 175.00
we are a specialty shop, I am not the cheapest guy by any means but I invite anyone to come to my shop in upstate New York see what we do see our equipment >ROTTLER BORING MACHINE NOT A DECK TOP BAR,BERCO LINE BORING,ZANROSSO CRANK GRINDER,SERDI,WINONNA & NEWEN HEAD EQUIPMENT,SUNNEN HONES AND ROD,CWT DIGITAL BALANCING SYSTEM,PETERSON STEEL SHOT AND BLAST EQUIPMENT,US STEEL & ACE METAL TREATMENT OVENS,PETERSON AND WINONNA CBN & PCD RESURFACING EQUIPMENT .
A LOT OF SHOPS FROM WHAT I SEE SUB OUT SOME OF THEIR WORK. BUT THERE IS ENOUGH WORK OUT THERE FOR ALL OF US IN THE MACHINE BUSINESS TO EVENLY COMPETE .
IT ALSO HAS A LOT TO DO WITH HOW COMFORTABLE YOU ARE WITH YOUR MACHINE SHOP GUY.
89563, RE: More about engine machine work
Posted by gilee_8, May-18-05 03:56 AM
The above is the machine shop that I was talking about.
He looks like a nice guy when I saw him.

I didn't get a chance to see his shop in person, but from his website, his shop looks clean and professional.

But even without all the options and use the CHEAPEST way the above suggested to machine my engine, still cost $1495

Does it worth it?
Because I rebuild my g/f eclipse engine before, with no parts provided, but only a standard (stock) engine block rebuild. (she spun a bearing) did everything above and the shop gives new rings, bearings, assembly (no bore) and only came out $600.

But now I provided all parts, seems too steep for me.
But I am still thinking!

Any input guys??

Hey man, I don't doubt your shop does excellent work. But damn! I work at a toyota dealership, and the guy that does all of our machine work, and most of the dealerships around here, rebuilt my block for me. He charged me $400. Granted I was given a discount for us providing so much business for him, but I don't think he would have charged me another 1700 bucks if I wasn't working here. He didn't skimp either. I'm not trying to bash you or anything, I just think it's too high.

hi, your machine shop cleaned, bored, decked ,honed, blasted, tapped, ground the crank ,tapped the oil galley holes, assembled the short block & tested it for 400.00?
maybe I am too high on my prices but I do have a shop full of work which should say something for itself,I do invite anyone here to see the shop equipment, engines being built the guys in the shop and our cover-girl that runs the office.
Thanks

He didn't test it and he only polished the crank. But yea $400 bucks. Like I said, I'm not bashing you. Just seems high to ME. I may have to come see that cover girl though. Any pics??? :D

i worked for engineman1 building engines for about 10 years and now own a repair/speed shop in ny. i can tell you that you will not find a better place to have an import engine built no matter what the cost. i bet all those machine shops on your block don't have all the best equipment? for a small block chevy, maybe. i look at all you guys that post pics of you blocks and heads that look real nice to someone who dosen't know. bored, honed, and spray painted is not all you need to do it right. this guy has all the best and newest equipment for machining and testing newer 4&6 cylinders aluminum or cast. he knows his shit too, been building mitsubishi and chrysler engines before there even was an eclipse. not the cheapest i know, i still deal with him and i still bitch about the price but i always pay because i know it will be right. i myself used to run almost every peice of equipment he owns so i know first hand what i'm getting. if anyones ever in the area you should go and check his shop out i think it would impress most. don't forget to come and check out my dsm junkyard too

balance - $125 + mallory if needed
assemble - $375 - $450
magnaflux - $40
bore and hone w/ plates - $200
wash, clean, tap, shot blast, etc. - $85
line hone mains - $125
index grind crank - $80
deck block - $65

This is the shop I used to work at (approx. prices) and he's one of the most expensive in my town. He uses the Rottler CNC machine to bore, deck, and do other general machining, he uses one of the old style floating bench Serdi's for all the head machining, and uses generally the same type of equipment you are using. As shown some of your prices jive, but pretty much all your machining costs are too high. I can understand the feeling of not making enough money per job, but you charge too much and you'll end up with a negaative rep. I hope I'm being fair enough to you.

Hrm, I got a complete 383 short block shipped to me for 1200. That includes crank, rods, rings, bearings, and pistons, all machine work (boring, line honing, decked, magnafluxing, etc) and the price of the block itself (no core). That included assembly and plugs and the like. I can't beleive that import engines are that expensive to have done.

I would say though that if you like the guy, go with the guy. Trust is a huge factor here. I used wheelermotorsports, and they were 1500 miles away. I don't know if they do anything other than v8s though.

My block is at the machine shop now. I took it to them with the crank in. They are charging me a little under $500 to clean the block, remove the crank and grind the journals, hone the cylinders and reassemble the bottom end with the JE's and eagle rods that I have already purchased. I'm not sure if they are going to balance or not. Rod and main bearings are included in the $500. They cost me $80 from them, I could have saved $30 or so if I would have purchased them elsewhere, but they didn't say how much they were going to be when I told them to go ahead and get them for me. I found out the other day when they called to tell me that it's going to be another week before they get to it. bastards.
