89470, possible to use tranny cooler part of rad. for oil cooler? Posted by 97grnRS, May-16-05 08:52 AM
well i have an extra radiator from a 91 eclipse brand new.. i can make the hoses work by extending the lower one a lil . but it also has the ports for a auto tranny cooler.. could i use them for oil instead or is that a bad idea? i could tap into the line before my turbo and run the outlet of the cooler to the inlet on my turbo.

I don't see why it would be a problem. You'd have to make sure it can flow enough volume and keep adequate pressure. Those would be your main concerns. Trans fluid flows through there and holds good PSI in the tranny, but it's also thinner.
The only thing I wouldn't like about it is the added head it's trying to disipate in the radiator. The water runs through it and gets cooled, but if you have oil running through it, it may be harder to cool the water for the motor. I don't know what oil temps reach, but I would think that it's hotter than water temps. This is just my own speculation, though.
