buy a new crank. if you fucked it up, its out of balance, goodbye motor.

Posted by totaleklipse97, May-15-05 02:57 PM
please be more specific, is it the crankshaft bolt for the pulley?? or what are you speaking of?
89438, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by InFiNiT3, May-15-05 03:32 PM
ok more specific... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... ok i was installing my pully (UD) when the bolt spun freely after 3 (360*) turns now its wont screw out nor back in... kinda like a when u put a screw into dry wall and have to pull on it to get it to unscrew...

now i can probably tap the bolt back out but incase i fuck up the threads in the process i wanna know my options

Like i said..

Since you fucked the threads on the crank, the crank is now out of balance. By you trying to tap the crank to recreate threads, you will further knock it out of balance. If the crank is out of balance what happens? If you know the answer to that question, then the only alternative is....

Get a new crank.

im not questioning your knowledge james, BUT i don't see how the crank is out of balance by a misthreaded crank bolt. Do you mean it misthreaded *because the crank was out of balance* or do you mean *since he misthreaded the crank bolt he threw the crank out of balance* ???? Maybe with a better explanation i will understand but your response seems a little vague.
89443, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by siueclipse, May-15-05 04:00 PM
Basically put, if he fucked up the threads in the crank at all, its fucked. The smallest fuck up on a crank can cause massive problems with the bottom end of the motor. If he fucked up the bolt, who cares, get another bolt.
89444, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by rucr8z2, May-15-05 04:01 PM
If only the first couple of threads are damaged buy a tap(Snap on tools or mac tools) and retap the hole slowly with lubrication (wd40 or pb blaster) if the all of the threads are fucked up then talk to a machine shop and have it towed over to them... This will not throw your balance off because it's in the centerline of the crank not like its on a rod journal!

89447, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by siueclipse, May-15-05 04:09 PM
LOL

Now thats funny. A crank is perfectly balanced from one end to the other.
89448, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by totaleklipse97, May-15-05 04:21 PM
So is this why we can use a UDP that is not harmonically balanced? Our crank is internally balance and we are able to use pulleys on the outside that are not balanced like our stock pulley. How is this any different? Especially if it's only the first 3 threads on the crank??
89451, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by XtremeRS, May-15-05 05:52 PM
How far are the threads damaged? If it's not much, just try a re- threading tap. If its worse than that, use a helicoil. It's not going to throw off your balance.. If you have to use a helicoil, it wont be fun drilling the hole for the helicoil though..

ok ill just have to tap the bolt out then and see just how bad its screw'd up. i have the coorect tap for it but ya i can picture just how much fun it will be drilling that fucker lol. And if i do need a new crank ill just stroke it...(haha)

Hell what im hoping is that the udp is on a lil crooked and the bolt just caught on a lip (wouldnt that be nice) Ill keep u guys posted and if i can get pics i will. Thanx for all the help tho

Unless your crank rotates end over end, drilling, tapping, rebalancing, or splooging in the crank pulley bolt hole will do nothing. It simply is not far enough out of the center of rotation to contribute meaningfully to vibration.

A good measure of acceptable balance is .07 oz./inch (radius). This winds up being .004375 lb./inch (radius)

The bolt's threads are roughly 1/2" in diameter, so from centerpoint to the outside of the threads is roughly 1/4". This means that you can be, acceptably, at .25", .0175 lbs out of balance. A helicoil doesn't weigh much more than .28 oz., so it is doubtful that it is more than .28 ounces out of balance.

Tapping that hole will not remove .28 oz. from the crank, either. Even if it did, it wouldn't be removing that much from one side of the hole, it would be evenly distributed.

Think about it - do you think that they balance the crank bolts that they sell at the dealership? I doubt it.

Maybe you should get your crank bolt balanced, James. Might make a difference... :P

420A crank has pretty "deep" threads and IF you're using a relatively "short" bolt with a new UDP, it could possibly act like it's stripped. Get a longer 12MM bolt...oh say around 60mm long (get a high strength one though 8.9 or better)... You might be pleasantly surprised. :thumbsup
Also, IF it is stripped all the way thru, it's still not the end of the world, but it will probably take a good machine shop to fix it.

thats what i was trying to do.... only thing is i cant get anything behind the bolt.... the reason im messing w/ it (not like the pully's going anywhere) is to line up those damn TC bolts on the FW... its been sitting for so long its a bitch to move the FW by its teeth.... was thinking maybe getting the puller back on real real tight and try turning it that way......THANK GOD I TIMed CORRECTLY lol

You can helicoil it, but.....you gotta be able to drill it good and straight, then tap it according to the helicoil kit.
Because of the depth, you may need to stack a couple of helicoils in there....I've had to do that before too.
That pully is practically a "press-fit onto the crank snout and the bolt is just insurance that it stays there so it's not the most severe duty in the motor, but it does need to be there.
89533, RE: crank re-thread
Posted by lgjhn, May-17-05 11:39 AM
I'd still check the overall thread depth if you haven't already. I've seen a couple of the stock bolts (these could have been replaced somewhere down the line) on these motors that were barely engaging the threads yet the thread depth was pretty deep.
Good Luck.

goood idea tho bud.... when /if i get this bolt out... im definitely replacing it.... make install the pully alot ezier too if the bolt was a bit longer :)
