Just getting started building up a 96 Talon Esi with replacing the block, but not really finding anything online except race engines? Is there a particular block anyone suggests, what exactly should i look for. any help is appreciated.

If you have to replace it, go to a junk yard and get one out of another eclipse or talon. They may make you buy the whole thing, head and all. Or you could go to the for sale section here. I bet somebody's got one.

Why are you replacing the block? Just curious, as that answer might affect the suggested solutions.

I fear this is another 4g63 replacement thread.

If you want to do a rebuild and you'd like to keep your car on the road at the same time ... find another 420a block in one of the locations listed above and then start rebuilding it in your garage or basement. How you rebuild it will depend on what type of application you would like to run (nitrous, turbo, etc..). When it's done or all time and money have been exhausted take a weekend and do an engine swap. That's the best way to do it ... many guys will do all sorts of things to their motor, blow it up, and then rebuild. You learn alot that way .... but, like they say, you learn the hard way.

OK, seriously for those that gave some help.. its appreciated. Second, to the immature high schoolers on here, im looking to keep the car stock with the 420a just have a block with less mileage, not looking to up the HP, or run NOS... So do us all a favor, and get a life...

well if you just want it stock, then get the master rebuild kit from howell automotive, replace everything with stock parts, its like 400 bucks

There is no reason to jump all over the guy for asking an innocent question. He didn't even commit one of the seven deadly 2GNT sins, like asking about a "4G63 swap" or "E-bay chip".

Anyway...the first thing to do might be a compression test:

If those numbers turn out well and you don't burn a lot of oil, there might not be any reason to rebuild. If you decide to rebuild, but don't want increased performance, just buy the master rebuild kit as previously mentioned. Machining will be a few hundred bucks and you could assemble it yourself. You may need to have the head rebuilt too. That would run another few hundred to get the valve job and new lifters and rockers. Personally, I would skip the stock rebuild and get higher performance parts. For all the trouble a rebuild takes, make it worthwhile by getting some extra power.

if the compression test does hold up then you might not have to do a rebuild, but if the compression test yeilds a low number on a cylinder or two, than do a wet compression test to see if its the piston rings or if its in the top half of the motor, if it's in the top half, do a cylinder leak test to pinpoint the problem
