89337, Drove 20 miles without oil, any damage? Posted by grneclipse, May-12-05 05:50 PM
Guys, back to this car that I bought locally. It's a built 420a Hahn Turboed GS. It had JE pistons and crower rods, w/ 440 injectors, Vortech FMU, etc
Anyhow, I picked it up from the shop today after getting all the work done to it. Drove it about 20-25 miles, to pick up my girlfriend and drop her off at school.
We get home and start to clean the car, and while I'm checking out the fluids, I noticed that the dipstick is bone dry. I check 2-3 times and it's still bone dry. Shit! I check the cap and there's no "wet" oil either, just dried black stuff. I quickyly buy 5 quarts of Mobil and put it in and check the level. The oil now is still black and diry like.....anyhow, I'm freaking out, I hope I didn't damage anything to the car.
The car didn't smoke or anything and the EGT hit max of 1400
It doesn't sound like the car is knocking or anything, someone please hold my hand

Don't have the stock Eclipse anymore Just a stock Gsr now, :)

i have done that with my car (drove it and i checked the dipstick and no oil showed up on it). i added more oil and it seemed to be working fine. i dont have a turbo, so i dont know if that makes a difference or not. i wouldnt think it was bone dry because wouldn't that oil light come on in the gauge cluster if it was low or something?

It was probly just low. Im pretty sure your oil light would have come on if it was bone dry.

agreed. my roomate drove well over 20 miles in his VW with a quater sized hole in the pan (unknown to him til i checked it out, lol)...and he had no problems. its definatly not a good thing, but its sort of hit-or-miss.

If you damaged your engine with by running out of oil, you need a new engine (trust me I know). Theres no happy medium here, either you did or you didn't. So in other words, you were just low. But dirty oil is definetly not good for your engine either. Change it again maybe? :shrug

So did it really take all 5 quarts to bring the level on the dipstick back to the normal range???
That would tell you right there how low it really was (or wasn't).

If it's making a clicking or clacking sound, it's dead. Park it and get the crank machined.
If it still runs smoothly without any noises, you escaped disaster. You probably won't be so lucky next time, so keep your eye on it.

I added about 3 qts in it to bring it within the "mid-max" range, there' no clicking noise but there is what sounds like a gasket-leak. MAN! At least I knew why I got out of the 420a's when I did. LoL, just kidding guys, the car runs good so far, I dont' htink there's any clicking or clacking. I'm just surprised that the shop who redid my wiring, gauges, and intercooler piping wouldn't check my oil. Shit, I can't believe I didn't check the oil before I left. You live and learn I suppose, even though it would've been a very expensive fix.

Yup, I lost my oil pressure once too. Drove about 3 miles and it was done... No oil is no joke.

i bought my car with a bad oil leak i didnt know about, drove it for 2 months and it blew up on me christmas morning (talk about a shitty christmas present lol)..then i spent 3,500 bucks on a used engine (like 76,000 miles on it) and didnt even rebuild the dam thing or anything :(...well he also replaced a few other things (waterpump, clutch, and a couple other things)...that was before i knew ANYTHING about cars tho, and i think thats what actually made me check out this site and start learnin about cars..weird how shit happens
