What all parts from a PT can we use? Just those valvetrain parts? Would you suggest anyone do those just for safe measure or if it aint broke dont fix it? -- Brad Rickard 98 GS HRC Stage V (nuff said)

LAST EDITED ON 18-Oct-01 AT 10:05 PM (PST)The reason for the PT rockers and lifters is for higher revs. The Neon guys that rev to 8200 were having breakage problems.

All this thanks to Kiku: Mopar has redesigned the 4 cylinder rocker arms for the valvetrain to fix the problem with the previous generation. The previous generation rockers are prone to having the center, valve-depressing pad break out of the tip. This is instant death for your valvetrain.
The new design rocker arms are reported to be bullet-proof. It eliminates the M-bends at the tip. You can get these new re-designed rocker arms at your local mopar dealer and they will slip right into any DOHC Chrysler engine (2.0L or 2.4L).
Part#: 4884042AA (you'll need 16 of them).
Old Generation part#: 4667139.
Local Mopar dealer wanted $250 for these.

Again, this is all from Kiku: Mopar/Chrysler has a newly redesigned hydraulic lifter/valve lash ajuster that fixes a common problem with the previous 2000-earlier versions.
On high RPM trips, oil gets aerated and air bubbles travel up to the lash ajusters (causing lash and clatter). This causes the rocker arms (a/k/a cam followers) to get hammered really hard. They quickly become fatigued very quickly and will be more prone to self-destruction.
This new design has a bleed hole to allow any air to immediately escape, preventing the lash/hammering/blowup problem from ever happening.
These new revisions drop right in the place of the old design.
Part#: 4777976AA (you'll need 16).
Local Mopar dealer wanted $250 for these.
Howell wants $90 for these.

We have the same valve springs as them also. http://www.asog.net/parts/getdata.php3?id=15&filesize=16244
Thanks Kiku: Mopar High Performance Valve Springs. High-pressure single valve springs with damper. Used on exhaust and intake valves for all high performance applications. Made of chrome silicone. Shorter, fully compressed height. Allows for increased valve lift. Maintains spring load at higher RPM. A must for high performance cams.
You can get the whole set of these for $90 from howell. If you are gonna get valve springs than you may as well get the Crane set with Titanium retainers.

From Howell's Site: Crane valve springs are manufactured from the finest spring wire available, heat set for durability where possible, and coated with a rust inhibitor, for corrosion protection. Our Ultra Lite Ten titanium retainers are made from premium quality titanium alloy bar stock that is precisely machined on our own automated equipment. Each retainer is carefully quality control inspected for precision and accuracy. These retainers are available in the popular 10° design, for strength and ultra light weight $299

What would be the point of doing this if we can't alter our rev-limiter???? My head is stock and will stay that way till somemakes a chip or I get a stand alone ;-)

Thanks for posting that stuff, that was very helpful. So the mopar valve springs are 90 bucks and the howell ones are 299? ouch, big jump in price. I think I'll probably work my valvetrain over when my next couple paychecks come in. Do you think I should have someone install all of this, or do you think the average mechanic can do it? I'm pretty smart and I have the FSM's, think I could rough my way through it and save some $$$? BTW, I still have factory cams, i'm I just spinning my wheels or will it help w/ factory cams also? I don't plan on getting diff cams for awhile because I want this car to have street manors no worst than they already are.
BTW, anyone w/ a ported intake manifold and TB, any rough idle probs? -- Brad Rickard 98 GS HRC Stage V (nuff said)

If you spend a lot of time at the redline, the upgraded valvetrain would be a good investment.
I don't know how good the Mopar springs are. Some guys have had no problems, but CNNP does not like the Mopar springs, they say in high power with raised red line they may break... who knows.
The difference between the $90 an $300 is titanium. The Cranes use titanuim retainers reducing mass in your head. And they are very strong. The mopar are regular metal.
