check it out, i fabbed one up that looks very similar. i put it inline between my mr gasket crankcase evac system, and the PCV/breather. im stoked :) and the whole re-done PCV system costed like 60$ total.

I was thinking that the can shouldn't be vented because you want suction... with the filter the exhaust will be sucking fresh air from the engine bay through the filter and out the exhaust instead sucking it out of your valve cover? I just went ahead and bought and NRG can from nopi... $50 :(

i dont have one of those little do-hicky filter things

edit: they look like the pocket bike filters lol

for an NA app though which relies on vac...the picture shown will work fine.

you made a good point though.

i dont get it.

i just dont justify spending 50-100$ on a catchcan, when you can make one thats just as functional if not MORE.

Your crankcase evac. system will NOT work properly with that catchcan. You've going to lose vacuum through the breather filter.

Ah, I gotcha... guess I should've read the whole thread.

Just a tip, though... you're going to need more than the two 3/8"(?) ports on the valve cover for the crankcase evacuation system to do it's job. We're currently using two 1" valve cover ports on the race 4G63 GSX and we're using a single 2" port on my max effort street 420A turbo-GS. Do what you like, but we've been through 5 or 6 different crankcase relief systems and this is what we've found to work. Also- you really don't need a catchcan.

tell me more man, because seriously...im not going to learn this stuff unless someone teaches me.

i know i didnt need a catchcan, i didnt have one before (just ran right into the check valve) it was an easy DIY catchcan, so i figured why not.

how did you get a 2" port on your valve cover? i just used the stock sized PCV hose to the can and the same to the exhaust

Well... the catchcan isn't neccessary because it doesn't do anything other than disrupt the flow and increase the volume between the exhaust check valve and the valve cover. I see what you're trying to do though - trap oil and oil vapors. So how about we keep the oil in the engine and let the vapors go straight out through the exhaust? You do this by putting a baffle, screen, or filter at the valve cover port(s). Just use your imagination.

The reason you need a larger valve cover port (or ports), is because there is more pressure in the crankcase at idle than a couple of small 3/8" outlets can evacuate... I've measured it. Now, add wide open throttle, high boost, and some blow-by and it's a no-brainer that evac system isn't doing a damn thing to help... considering that it isn't even doing much at idle because the hose is too small and the exhaust-created vacuum is low.

As far as how to increase valve cover port size, you really have to use some imagination and creativity. On the 4G63 race car, I removed two fittings, drilled out the holes to enlarge them, tapped them, installed NPT to AN fittings, installed an AN to AN screen filter on each port, ran -16AN SS hose from each port to a Y-fitting, and -20AN to the exhaust check valve (modified with a steel -20AN fitting). Nearly the same system in being used on the 420A, but the valve cover has a single 2" port on top with an oil baffle and mesh screening to keep the oil in the engine.

I admire the enginuity and effort, but I have to say that those are the worst welds I have ever seen...
If you send that to me I would be willing to fix it for you.

Just a little hint, slow down, A LOT when you are welding, look for a sign of both metals melting together, that will get rid of that nasty beeded up stuff.

Not knocking you, just maybe helping your welding abilities.

Nice job by the way.

maybe you should reread his post that is NOT a picture of HIS catchcan, just a similiar design.

That isn't his welds though it was just a "sample" pic he used from some other welder/fabricator in a bad mood in a rush. Josh(turbo8u) really does strike a really nice bead for sure. You should see some of "his" work I know this is probably his crappy camera phone pic but gives you and idea of what he can do. I'm sure he will showcase some of his good pics

yea trust me, i dont weld like that :+

i started welding just scrap steel, then starter on 2g short shifters, then took on the task of fabricating and welding a custom 2.4L swap pan out of straight up 18 gauge steel. ive done a lot of exhaut stuff and motor mounts now, and i definately picked up a little skill with the gas mig :-D...cant wait till july }(

i'll get pics up of my work, just gotta snap some better pictorals

dougie, kickass info man. i was thinking of threading a pressure and vac gauge into the can to see how much vac it actually pulls (id say MAX like -7inHG)...thats interesting you measured crankcase pressure though, give me some more specifics on that if you can...

like crankcase vac with the old vs new setup, etc. was the crankcase pressure + when in boost WOT, no PCV? and in vac with the re-done PCV, or did it just lower the pressure?

and what do you mean by a -20an adapter in the exhaust? like a huge check valve?
