I'm in the middle of a timing belt job and I think that I may have a cam 180*s out. How can I tell? I'm about to remove the valvecover. Where do I go from there? I'm gonna sign on IM on my cell, so all help is appreciated!

Yes, stock cams. I'm assuming the holes will be visibile with the valve cover off or do you mean the timing marks on the gears themselves. It'd be cool if you werent away on AIM. =)

The holes will be visible on the cam itself. They should both face up.

ya bro they're about 4 " from the front of the head on the cam itself... very very ez..... there's also a tool out there that will grab the holes and line em up for ya.... but u can do it w/o spending 200$ for it lol I have one but i jacked it from satan (work)

Same here. Im wondering if I can make one. I always threw a 1/4" ratchet extension in there to hepl hold the cam so I can tightn down the cam gear, lol.

Well, the holes were aligned.


Sadly, 4 intake side lifters wiggle ontop of the valves when the lobes are not down, so I'm guessing this means I have 4 bent valves? Or am I way off? This car is starting to piss me off.

I thought on stock cams they both faced up regardless. are there two holes 180* opposed? I've never looked.

ok i think i confused everybody here. i was talking about the dowels on the cams to position the gear, in which case when the timing is right...one is up, one is down.

another way to tell if a cam is upside down is you'll have 0 compression on 2 cylinders and some on the other two.

...and i was taking about the locating holes on the cam itself, both of which should, as best i can remember, face up.

you are absolutely right Dino the locating dowel holes do point straight up if the cams are degreed with stock settings.

Of course, if you're still running stock gears (doubtful) the exhaust should have upside down text on it when the intake is right side up. :shrug

Dont confuse the locating "holes" with the cam gear locating "dowels". The holes are in the camshaft itself, and the dowels actually are on the end of the cam, that position the cam gear onto the camshaft. The "holes" both face up, and the dowels, one faces down, and one faces up. If you have a loose rocker, then you have bent valves..you broke the timing belt right?

Yes, the belt broke on me. So each lose rocker is a bent, valve? Therefore I will need to replace 4 intake valves. What all must be replaced along with the valves themselves? I'm hoping I have not damaged any pistons.

Its been posted a shit load of times if your timing belt breaks you bend valves. You could have posted that in the beginning to save quite a few people some time.
