I just thought I'd share what I've been playing with the last couple weeks in my spare time. Check out the link for more pics:

I left the top edge that goes over the injectors...it looks like I've cut it deeper but I didn't. The fine edge was left and I tapered the rest back to where the bullet shape starts. That area is blended gradually and smoothly into the runner. I'm keeping everything at 180 grit from the plenum to the head. It seems more than smooth enough with very light texture. I bored out the manifold to match the throttle body, and filled the EGR hole with JB weld then polished it.

Actually, no I couldn't, but the Matco tool guy is bringing me a long carbide bit so I can finish the job. I also made a mandrel so I can get 180 back in the runners to smooth it out. The manifold to runners is gasket matched, and smoothed with 180. Thanks for the compliments guys...this is my first attempt at doing this. I get so scared that the bit is gonna bite off more than it can chew. If you're trying this for the first time...just be gentle until you learn to control the bit. Oh, when it's completely finished, there will be a ton of pics.

I did the same exact thing. I used a dremel with the flexible extension on it and I was able to get the runners completely all the way up and down. Looks great, I never posted pics of mine, but it looked just like that.

did you notice any difference? If so I have an extra one I wouldnt mind playin with.

extrude hone is the best route to go but costy as hell. I work part time at w.o.t in south bend a porting shop. You can grind away on those injectors humps but dont get any where close to the injector hole it needs a slight lump to properly mix the air and gas. We figured this out by putting a manifold on a wet flow bench. but thats a nice job for your first time. If you want to make it look better get some cross buffs and polish it up, if your turbo that is . If not then i would leave them slightly rough for turbulence reasons.

Thanks for the info, I plan on going turbo soon, but for now I'm leaving the walls with a 180 grit finish. I haven't installed it yet, but as soon as I finish painting the engine bay of my other eclipse I will install it and let everyone know. BTW getting all the crap out of the engine bay to paint really-really sucks! Pics will be posted soon.

Someone ^^^ asked about noticing a difference .... it's really hard to say b/c when I ported my upper and lower out I did my rebuild at the same time along with a whole host of other mods all at the same time. I will say the car seems "snappier" from the line. Could be the Retrofit LSD or just a little better air flow. I like going to sleep knowing I did it though .... :thumbsup

was it all done with a dremmel?? what kind of bits did you use through the whole process?

if you want bits for the dremmel tool call cylinder head abrasives in rancho cordova california. 916 638 9008 www.bcheads.com, they have some grinding bits on a lengthy 1/8th inch shaft. it's about 3 inches long and fits perfeclty into the dremmel flex shaft. and... there's two different stones, one is shaped like a trapezoid and the other is a perfect circle which is great for the cylinder bowl area. ask for a catalog cuz they all kinds of cool shit. happy porting...chris

My experience with porting all the time is the first thing i recommend is dont use a dremel. They gotta lot of horsepower, but no torque or stability. Go buy a twenty dollar die grinder from walmart and buy a portingkit from summit or eastwood or something. If you wanna chew the metal really fast then buy a carbide burr for aluminum they make em from 1.5 inches to 6 inches long. thats the best route for beginners.

i got the dremmel kit that has the adjustable speed switch on the side and the flex section, combined with the bits that are available at c.h.a.'s, i found the job really easy. i used a slow speed on the dremmel and added some pressure with my hands and its very easy to control. get yourself a big can of wd-40 and keep your grinding area lubricated. the bits are only 3 bucks each and do last long enough to be worth it imo. i'm happy with the results and i already have a few port jobs lined up for the near future.
