88430, quick 2.4L question. Posted by micyek, Apr-18-05 12:46 PM
when I drop my block, crack, pistons and rod of at the machine shop to get ballenced and assembled I should tell them to put the srt-4 pistons in "backwards" right?

yea rotate the pistons 180* on the stock rods

You're going to drop crack off at your machine shop? At least you know they'll stay up all night working on your engine :P

smartasses...
anywho...explain it to me like you would to your mom. why do I have to switch the pistons on the rods...and not just rotate the whole rod and piston assembly? I assume it's because of the oil port on the rod.
And turby...in your oppinion about how much boost can I run on these pistons...I'm hoping for 15psi with your old fuel pump and a 034 EIC running 310 primaries and secondaries. But I just read a thread were you and Dino had a discussion on this matter. I would love to hear from Dino also....or any others that can give me an educated oppinion.

with SRT-4 computer and tuning im sure 500whp is obtainable.. so with the EIC and some timing control you could run 330whp somewhat reliably (meaning in my opinion i wouldn't push more than 370whp on a daily basis but im reserved) . The argument was the design vs. being that they are cast pistons.

well...300 is my goal for right now...so I guess they will be adequate for a while :)

the head essentially on an srt-4 is backwards, the block is still the same direction...so thats why we rotate the pistons 180*. think about it this way (on an srt-4) the oil ports on the rods are in the front, and the intake is also in the front (ski ramp on the piston), but on our head...you want the ski ramp on the intake side in the back, and you still want the oil port in front. that a good explanation susie cupcake?
in my opinion (based on what ive seen) the srt-4 pistons will hold a solid 20psi no friggin problem. detonation will murder even the strongest of alloys, so obviously tuning is a huge factor in how much power YOU can throw at them. srt guys have made 500whp because they can tune, its really that simple. they avoid detonation, they avoid failure. honestly i think 400whp on pump gas is so do-able, wait till you in ride in an rst-4....you're going to fill your drawers with shit so fast and be glad you never go back to 2 liter land. shit...even NA with 8:1 compression and crower 2's, the car feels boosted up to 4k rpm's lol. torque is luscious.
ive been talking to a friend of mine at chrysler and he keeps telling me how many gt cruiser and srt's have had to have the blocks replaced because of bent rods :wary...yea, he's had like 7...honestly i dont know WHY, but its true....so who knows why some of them fail. the rods are way beefier than the pistons though, its weird.

I really think you give them too much credit, and the factory management system the SRT uses too little. Most SRT owners do the same thing 2GNT owners do - slap in some big injectors, a bigger turbo, and a bunch of piggybacks. They are simply already ahead of the game because the factory has done its best to tune around their stupidity, where it did not for ours.

if you think you're going to make 500whp with a stock 2gnt ECU not designed for either boost, or a 2.4L...let alone injectors larger than 42lbers...you're really just going to be fighting an uphill battle, and yea...you'll probly blow it to high hell.
megasquirt, its the 2gnt ecu v.2
in my opinion, the 2.4L is an enthusiast motor. the mother fucker shakes the entire car, its no grocery getting neon...and well, if you're going to have a hybrid funktified motor at insane power levels, you're going to need something other than a cheesy piggyback or voltage clamped whatever to get it running the way it should. thats just my 2 cents, you cant cut corners, and really you shouldnt...

I don't ever plan on getting anywhere near 500...300 will make me happy for quite some time....I hope...LOL

yeah...it's kind of a pipe dream for a gear head to be happy with his/her current HP isn't it...LOL

you turn the piston 180 degres on the rod but the rod is directional also so make sure that they just don't turn the whole rod/piston assembly 180 degres
