I definately am going to buy new valves this time around but I need some shopping advice. Will I need an oversized valve? I'm assuming it something like an oversized piston to compensate for that messed up valve seat or something would be a good idea to get it oversized?

Springs? My springs have never failed me (knock on wood) should I buy a new set of stock springs too? I'm looking at those what was it crane or crower or something stiffer springs. You really only need those if your going past like 7000 RPM? I don't plan on bringing it that high all the time. Will I be fine with a set of new stock springs or should I replace them at all?

Same thing for rockers and lifter do I really have to replace them or not?

Oversized valves probably wouldn't hurt, especially if you are still going to run boost. Maybe look into stainless steel. If you can afford them, get it done. Someone can elaborate a lil more than I can on this one technically.

Are you running bigger than stock cams? Plan to? If so, upgrading the valve springs is highly recommended. Depending on how long you've had your stock valve springs, (high mileage factor comes into play here) then I would replace them. Kind of a reassurance factor here.

You don't have to replace them, but I'd say if you can afford the parts, upgrade the head. The new pt cruiser lifters/lash adjusters are a common upgrade around here. They are supposed to have a bigger oiling port compared to stock.

A lot of the things you say "do I really have to replace them or not?" is kind of like saying, I could probably get by without replacing or fixing them now, but what am I looking at in the future to replace? I'd replace as much as you can now while you've got the downtime.

You could get oversized valves, but you would have to have the seats cut bigger to accomodate them. Oversized valves are for flowing more air, at least that is the most relevant part of our discussion, you don't need oversized valves for a valve job. Unlike pistons, which need to be the appropriate size (.010, .020, etc.) to fit a bored engine (which ought to be done on most engine rebuilds), the valve seats are just cut 'down' not 'out' and in such maintain their original size. Now having said that, if you are going to have your valves cut anyways, and you are buying new valves anyways (at least get stainless) and the cost difference at the shop and parts house is similiar, then you might as well put in bigger valves so you can say "1mm oversized valves sucka!" or something to that effect.

I see no reason not to get some Crane or Crower springs (I don't know which one people have had better luck with) if for no other reason than they will give the piece of mind that if you miss a shift or otherwise over rev, you won't float a valve and run the risk of a Piston vs. Valve battle royal. And if ever you want to upgrade your cams from stock then you already have the springs for it and thus won't have to change them on the car (a bitch).

As for the lifters, umm, sure! Go ahead and change them out for PT Cruiser lifters, everyone seems to like them. At 100,000 miles if you are going to do your head, you might as well get all new stuff. Good luck on it, shouldn't hurt too much (financially speaking)

I say rebuild the whole thing with SS valves, and related new parts. That way no more worries.

I had a set and they grew legs at my parents house and just disappeared.

The SS, 1mm oversized valves from ERT, Crower springs, Crower Ti retainers, PTC lifters/lash adjusters, and a 5 angle. It's peace of mind Hades. You're boosting, I'd think you could really make the most of the oversized valves. You don't need to have the Titanium retainers, but the springs, valves and hardware pretty much bullet-proof your valvetrain. You don't want to go through this again, do you? Do it up right and reap the rewards!


I know it might hurt a bit in the wallet up front, but believe me, the first time you wind her out to redline afterwards you will be glad you did.

my point is that if the shoe fits, wear it. its sonsiderably cheaper to rebuild a stock head than it is to build one with "better" parts

SS valves are nice though :) friend of mine has an extremely ported head and 2mm oversized and his car screams like a bitch slut :thumbsup

And one other thing which influenced me: Since I'm still all motor, I don't have a hair dryer forcing massive air and fuel through a stock head. ;) I need all the flow I can get right now.

yeah I can understand what you guys are saying about should I replace it or not. Its like gambling whether the part will fail later on haha and in this case I lost after 5k miles.

Anyway I'm gonna go ahead and replace everything just because its got highmileage, this thing better not have to be opened up again >.<

I'm gonna get new valve seals and guides while I'm at it too I had this oil burning problem that I thought I fixed with replacing the seals a year ago so this sucka better go 3000 miles with not burnt oil.

Now the rockers I haven't heard anyone say anything about those. Howell sells these SBI rockers that they say are PT style or something. Will those be a good idea to get also I know I've heard of some people cracking theirs. Then again I look at the rocker picture and it doesn't look much different than mine O_o

oh oh oh I know I'm long winded haha but will having oversized valves affect my emissions at all? Hopefully get better emissions O_o I want my car to pass smog

i just found a full on PT head on ebay for 50$ and swapped the rockers and lifters

the rockers look the same yea, but i *think* the pt's are hardened? im not sure...but my valvetrain got considerably quieter with the pt parts

I had the same exact damage in my 1G. Replaced my valves with oem valves, and new valve stem seals. Still running perfectly.

When a 420a head is only $50-100, it really doesnt pay to upgrade it for just a daily driven car.
