87709, Turning the RS into a RS-T ... Advice anyone? Posted by ColtsNumba1Fan, Apr-03-05 07:53 PM
Last summer i was talking to a guy on ebay who was selling his whole old entire turbo setup from his 96 eclipse because he had some 2,500 new kit to put on, he was going to give me it all for around 700 shipped or something, its been awhile since we talked but I backed out of it because I heard it was too hard to install that to my car, I'd need way too much I was told, 1 guy even told me I'd be better off to get new injectors, headers and nitrous, another told me if I wanted a turbo added to my eclipse, buy a gst LOL so I was scared away so-to speak but since I've been looking around, I do know its damn sure possible so can anyone tell me if they have 1 for sale? Or know anyone? If not, if I was to buy it piece by piece, what would I need? I dont have 2000 dollars to spare I'm looking for something used to get me started, then upgrade as time goes, help anyone?

It'd be best to look in the Sale/Wanted section.

I just searched and started reading, thats the best way to figure out the best route to go. Just read until you are confident in making a decision on what you want to do.

It sounds like you're saying that you were going to buy the "turbo set-up from a 96" which to me means someone had you convinced that the turbo stuff from a GST or GSX will work on your car and it won't. You have to spend about $2000 to get a turbo kit (manifold, fuel pump, fpr, fuel lines, turbo, intercooler, bov, piping, missing link, the list goes on and on) but you can not just get shit off a GST and slap it into your car. Two totally different engines dude. That's what I thought when I bought my car in the first place too and I was pretty pissed when I realized I was dead wrong.

hahn racecraft put it best. why not upgrade everything at onces and be faster rather than buy a turbo car and upgrade everything anyway. i thought the same thing when i bought my first rs too. i was going to bolt on turbo shit from a gst(not quite!)but now i'm glad to have a 420At. my best advise is try to figure out who knows their shit and listen and ask questions. if you piece one together look me up because i have some parts laying around like a fmu, injectors,stage1 intake pipe

because you still dont HAVE a factory turbo car, thats why. the GST/X wasnt just an engine/xmission option, it also had a nicer interior and whatnot, not to mention a much bigger aftermarket, an ECU that knows what boost is, and (for the GSX) alot more potential.

don't be a dumba$$ my interior is identical to the turbos save for the leather option, and the amount that I save on insurance would more than add up to the amount of a turbo kit in a year or two. Quit flaming and go entertain yourself somewhere else.

oh really? is it? look at your gauge cluster and compare it to that of a turbo recently? they have an extra gauge..(or 2 in some cases (my case)) and the CD player is standard on turbos, insignificant maybe, but this means you gotta pay for it on the NTs.
not to mention that the turbo kit that you would buy to put on doesnt include an ECU that knows what boost is, any kind of powertrain warranty , any injectors to safely support factory turbo boost/power levels, and is totally untuned, so, for safeties sake, you must run it pig rich, resulting in abhorrent fuel economy (did i mention you need to use premium now?)
and im not just hating on the 420A because im sort of 4G63 fanboy; no, i think the 420A is a far superior engine and id prefer mopar power over mitsubishi anyday, but you must realize that a factory boosted car will ALWAYS be better suited to modification than the nonboosted trim level of that same car, given similar displacement. (because i KNOW a 5.0 has eleventybillion times more potential than the 2.3 Turbo)

my rs came with a factory cd!! and who the fuck would want a junk factory boost gauge anyway. your 390 and 450 injectors will have to be replaced if you want to make serious power too. so what my car runs rich at an idle, well worth it when i blow by a gst or reel in and make a gsx look silly. i was only joking when i siad go away before but now come on. know what your talking about before you go running it.

oh, i appreciate the sentiment of a "lowly" rs or gs smoking a gst/x, but hahns idea that turning an NT into a turbo to save money or whatever, is rediculous.

Seems to me that there are 2 different types of Eclipse drivers. 420a and 4g63.
See, I get tired of the dogging on. Who gives a fuck if we have a 420a. Maybe some of us couldn't afford/find a turbo car. And more importantly maybe we don't want to dish out the insurance. I can turbo the hell out of my 420a and my insurance never needs to know! :)
Why not just help each other out. Give us advice with the 420a on how to hang with the big boys. After all, we all drive the same bodystyle, we should be like a large family.

i like the challenge. i like taking my slow car, and making it fast. i would take a GS over a GS-T any day of the week, and if it wasnt for the GSX's AWD i would never look at a 4g63 eclipse with envy. any schmo can buy a turbo eclipse, do $500 worth of mods to it and have a decently fast car. i like being the underdog, kicking some ass, and saying "look what i did, what i accomplished, with a little knowledge, money, and a lot of hard work. you look down on me because i have a 420a, i look at you in my mirror because im faster, and i just kicked your ass."

Ya, thats good. I just have heard so many damn sides of the story. The 4g63 is better, faster, etc. ect. Then I have heard the 420a is a better motor, can be fast, etc. etc. Then I had a guy just tell me that the 420a is in a Neon. I was like WTF? That is weak. Doesn't make me feel much better about my motor. I am not giving up on it though. I will have mine turboed and ready to rock. I am still learning (alot) but I would like to accomplish my goal of making my GS fast. I think I will even keep my GS sticker on the back. :)
I do like your point about any schmo buying a turbo car lol.

and thats a problem? if you wanna be technical about it, 2gs arent DSMs either, DSM was disbanded in 93. its just that the mechanicals are quite similar that they are called DSMs, and with an NT, you lose even that link. so dont get technical, or else your car isnt a DSM either.

yeah, mitsubishi still runs the plant, its just not a DSM plant. notice how your car has an MMCA vin plate and MMCA vin stickers? so do talons. real DSMs say diamond star motors on the plates/stickers.
