87337, Really getting fed up! Car won't fire now.... Posted by tim97rs, Mar-21-05 07:28 AM
this is getting really old! after only eight miles on new clutch with car running just fine... i goto starbucks this AM, let my turbo timer shut off the car, come out and car won't fire. it turns over just fine but no fire. it did back fire a few times....
had to tow it home (AGAIN!!!!) and went thru everything i can think of: fuel is getting to all cylinders, changed out coil pack, measured resistance on wires and coil pack, disconnected MSD and tried that, all with the same results. car turns over but won't fire. now at home when it turns over after a few revs, it "catches" once like it has to much compression to keep turning over or something. WTF? why would it just stop firing? i have no codes either.
any ideas please...

This is totally a guess, but is the turbo timer preventing it from starting? Like, is it fried, and not letting the engine run? I don't know how they work, seeing as I don't have one, but I guess I'll be the first to try and help.

its a turbo timer built into my alarm system with remote start, so..???

Well, again I don't know since I haven't worked on a car with that on it. Does the alarm, remote start work?
Don't our cars have an ASD relay? Would a failure in that prevent it from running?

i disconnected the alarm... nothing different. still won't fire.

Check the crank angle sensor harness, and the cam angle sensor harness. You might have knocked one loose reinstalling the trans.
Also might want to try completely bypassing your MSD.

im gonna chech all my other sensors in s few minutes. also, i did the bypass with the MSD plug...nothing. something else i just thought of, for the past 2 days (and 8 miles)i've had my neg battery cable grounded to a bolt on the middle of the trans, and not the starter bolt. could that ahve anything to do with my issue?

why not hook it back up to the starter and see?

did that. nothing. keep in mind i have driven the car without issue for 2 days, then all the sudden... poof, no fire. also, all volt checks are in range for cam position and crank angle sensors at the harnesses.
how do i actualy check for spark agian...?

87347, RE: Really getting fed up! Car won't fire now.... Posted by 96eclipse2nr, Mar-21-05 10:20 AM
well, you can pull all the plugs and disconnect the fuel pump relay, stick a spark plug in the boot...ground the threads...have a buddy turn the key and look for a spark (free solution) you can get one of those inline spark checkers at an auto parts store.

Take sparkplug out ... hold by the end. Crank the car over. You should see the spark on the plug to the electrode.

tried to connect to my OBDII scanner program and see if there were any pending CELs, and it wont connect. it says theres no response. how can you tell if the ECu is fried? would i still get power to my various sensors? would i get anything at all?

un hook a plug wire and hold a screwdriver next to the end of the coil and crank it, see if there is a spark, you will need a buddy to help you obviously. also, this hapened to me last year when i was driving on the highway, my car just quit firing and i had no cels. I had it towed home, and plugged up my OBDII scanner and got no codes. Tried replacing the plugs, wires and coil and nothing. I was getting gas but no spark. Replaced the relay and nothing. Then i replaced the crank angle sensor and still nothing. Finally just replaced the cam sensor and it worked. I dont know, just throwing an idea to ya tim.

When a motor wont fire up, you need to go about it in a simple way. It needs fuel and spark to run, so those are the first things to check. Above posts already told you how to check for spark. If you have been cranking it for a while, then pull the spark plug and it should be wet with fuel. See which one you are not getting, then report back to us :)

ive pulled the plugs 2-3 times and there is definately fuel getting to the plugs, so the spark is the next thing. its actualy kinda hard to get a spare body to crank the car while i check other thigs. i'll let ya know about the spark tomorrow.

Definately getting fuel. How about too much fuel? flooded and too rich to catch.

^^^^thought about that, but its not as much fuel like when my 034 EFI was programmed wrong, theres just enough fuel in the cylinders from normal firing...just without the firing.

Sounds same like when my MOTOR fuse blew. It is in the fuse block under the hood next to the ecu. Stupid fuse cost me a 50 mile tow job.

nope. not that... its good.

sounds like your ecu is fried. Find one that works from someone and see what happens.

well.... no spark on plugs 1&2, so no spark either on 3&4. now what... should i check if im getting 12V to the ignigtion harness at the coil? or should i just look at either the CPS, or the CAS. speaking of which, bob kise said there is a crank angle sensor and a crank sensor. which one is the one on the back of my block?

Kise is confused. There is a cam angle sensor and a crank angle sensor and that's it. The crank angle sensor is ojn the back of the block above the oil filter adapter.

Check if you are getting 12V to the middle wire going to the coil. Also check the ASD relay? Crank angle sensor ... back of the block one ... is the one used for ignition timing.

okay, unless i cant use a mulitmeter... with the MSD plugged in i get nothing on the mutlimeter at the middle pin on the coil plug. with the jumper in place and the MSD taken out of te loop, i get 9.xx V at the middle pin. however i still am not getting any spark to #1 plug. i have it grounded to one of the suspension studs with a screw driver and no spark.

87375, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by DSMRoadster, Mar-22-05 07:56 AM
just something simpler. did you check to make sure none of you coil wires are grounding against the engine?
|
87376, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by tim97rs, Mar-22-05 08:29 AM
yea, nothing grounded out. all wires enclosed nicely.
and disregard the MSD part of post above, i called MSD and they said its normal to show the open circit reading that i was getting.
i've got 2 relays on my firewall by my brake fluid resivoir, which on would be the ASD relay, and how would i check it?
i've called Bob kise and have a new CPS and CAS on the way...

87378, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by XtremeRS, Mar-22-05 11:26 AM
ASD relay is the second one in from the driver side fender. The relay closest to the fender is the fuel pump relay. YOu can replace that relay with any 12v SPDT relay, found at any alarm/stereo shop. It will plug right into the relay socket. I had a problem like this with the fuel pump relay..was a bad relay..
|
87380, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by tim97rs, Mar-22-05 02:15 PM
plugged in a new relay. nothing different...
well, im gettin thru just about everything, only the CAS and the CPS left to go i think... (right?)
|
87382, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by turbo8u, Mar-22-05 02:43 PM
crank sensor
edit: when i got my motor back in, had the EXACT same problems. it was the wiring for the crank sensor.

87389, RE: NO SPARK!!!!! >= ( Posted by RxR_Eclipse, Mar-22-05 04:53 PM
Tim when you turn the key on do you hear the relay's CLICK? I would get the same thing when my ecu went out. I know this sounds pretty crazy but take a hammer and tap the ecu with the key ON. If your relay's click on then you know its the ecu that is fucked up. No joke at all man, my ecu did this. I could hit it with the hammer and it would click the relay's on. Make sure all the fuses under the hood are good too.

Try unpluging the harnesses that go into the ecu then put them back in. My friends car would not run because he had a loose connection.

I have a spare ECU for a 97 I can send you.. PM me if you need it. It's just sitting in my trunk.
