Do I have 2 bad rings? I didn't get to do the oil test yet but I am gonna do that later. SO what do you high tech engine gurus think?

Hmmm... those do sound a little low... Where are you again? High altitudes do lower compression, but I didn't think you were at a high elevation.

But they do sound low to me... any valvetrain noise? Try the leak down test and let me know...

I am at Sea level in Tampa FL. Numbers 3 + 4 sounded okay to me, I think 1 + 2 are the problem. I have a little valvetrain noise but thats due to the regrinds and the shims (.030) not being thick enough.

Valve cover gasket is brand new, I just changed it with the cams. This engine from the head down is only 15,000 miles old. I got a full shortblock under warranty. Then Satan fucked up and I got a new head and valves. I am about ready to sell this car!!! Low compression on a somewhat new shortblock, used tranny already has 1-2 shift grind like the old one. This is really getting to me! :-( :-(

There's only one way you are allowed to sell your car! If you buy another one! :-) I can't have one of the few others building NA cut and run on me ;-)

Did you get a used motor put in? or a rebuild? What type of warranty was on it? Are your Cams High lift?

the numbers are not really that low. The main issue is the variance between the numbers. It might be worth a retest, but your numbers look more like weak rings vs bad rings. Basically just getting tired and worn out, but the numbers are really not that low.

Fast420A.

did you know that you loose compression with high lift cams?
the Cams make the valves stay open longer, that along with the overlap, your compression numbers will go down (this is why it's a good idea to mill the head to boost the compression a bit up.

your problem is not 172 psi, it's the fact that you have more than 10% difference between the cylinders.

and as Kory said, try to make another compression test, but this time do a wet compression test, put a little bit of Oil in the spark plug hoes (after taking the plugs out) and do the test, if that boosts the compression up, then your rings are going bad, if not, then your problem is else where.

other than bad rings you might have
- bad cams (the loops are bigger in some places than others)
- your lifters are not being pushed down evenly (try shimming the lifters that are still ticking)

I hope that helps

The engine was a brand new shortblock a year ago when the first motor blew a rod. Then about 8,000 miles in to the new shortblock the rod was knocking again and Satan took it back in and put in a new crank and bearings. I don't have a warranty on it anymore though. The cams I have are supposedly a high compression drag grind, I don't have high compression yet so I knew I was gonna lose some compression. I am not going to mill the head because I don't want any problems with the cam timing being off a tooth. I am getting high compression pistons to raise it. I have .030 shims in all the lifters, do you think I should put in the .060 because there is still a little lifter noise?
I am going to redo the test with the oil later today to see what happens.

Alright guys, how hard is it to take the engine apart and stick in some new rings? Anybody got any other ideas? Maybe I should just sell it and buy a 1G AWD.

It's just one fucking thing after another. I spent $750 on a used tranny because my 2nd gear synchros were gone and the gears were grinding EVERY 1-2 shift. Now my (new) used tranny is starting to grind at high rpm shifts. I grinded at the fucking track last night on my first run ever. It sucks!

I have my original tranny sitting in the garage. I think I am gonna rip it apart and see what it's gonna take to fix it. I don't want to keep having problems with this car! I am debating on finding a CRX or Hatchback Civic for a Vtec swap. I need to go out and smoke a "cigarette"!!

What kinda tranny fluid you using, I filled up with BG Syncroshift and it worked wonders against mishifting.

Also when you retest make sure the engine is HOT. I got low ass number because I did it when it was cold.

Grrr it's gonna eat you up!

Well the spark plugs were burning my hands when I pulled them out so I know it had to be pretty warm! :)
I am gonna retest tomorrow morning when I get home from work and do the oil thingy if they are still lower.

Oh and the grinding isn't mis shifting, it just grinds on the shift from 1-2, usually at higher rpms.

Go to any auto parts store and they have a compression tester. It comes with the instructions but you basically just screw it in to the spark plug hole and crank the starter until the needle on the gauge quits going up.
