86701, Building custom exhaust, Got questions. Posted by LeJeune123, Mar-05-05 11:10 AM
I have looked at other quiet exhaust and have found none that are both cheap and look good. So, I have decided to just make my own. I would like to go with a dual tip muffler and the exhaust piping I will be using is 2.5 mandrel bent. I want it to be almost a quiet as stock at idle and up until about 5500+ after that I don't care. I need to know what kind of resonators I should be looking for and about how many would I use. Also where would be a good place to pick the resonators up. The resonators I really want are the ones with the stainless steel mesh inside cause the fiberglass ones I hear get empty after a while and the exhaust just sounds really bad. I anyone has any suggestions please feel free to chime in and give me a little guidance. Also if anyone knows a auto shop that would carry the resonators besides any exhaust shops cause I have already tried those.

Look up RRE, they sell resonators.

Yeah. That's what I told this guy on Toonerz. Even gave him a link. :P Oh well.
EDIT: He did say thank you, so I guess it's okay.
Dude, i would just get the ones from RRE. You're going to lose velocity regardless what you choose. If you're NA, stick with a 2.5" and mabe get it the length of your cat. Flange it and replace your cat with it. Then you can swap back out if you have emissions. Otherwise, maybe just get a longer one and replace an entire straight section. :shrug My Cherry Bomb is 33" long and starts where the cat once did. ;)

So your resonator is 33" long, damn, I can't go out and measure my exhaust after the cat casuse I don't have a jack with me at the moment. Do you remember how much more length you had after that long resonator cause I will get enough to go all the way to the end of the straight if possible.

I have checked the resonators at RRE but they look like cheese graters on the inside and I believe that would slow the air flow(I have nothing to back up that theory). I love RRE's price on those things though. If I get the resonators from RRE how many would you suggest cause I don't want to be fart canning down the road. I already have a GS-T cat-back and I have a ractive muffler on the back and I believe eventhough it is pretty quiet I would like it to sound almost stock.

I believe you are going to sacrifice some air flow with resonators no matter what.

unless you're going all out on NA mods I think 2.5" is too big and you'll make no low end power.

I am kinda going all out. I already have a I/H/P and am waiting on the money to get my head and intake swapped with my P&P ones. I also have a stock bored out TB to 55mm. As of now I haven't any plans for a performance head rebuild cause my tranny needs a little work.
