86696, Engine Trouble (cont. from Rad Leak)
Posted by Sceptre, Mar-05-05 07:24 AM
hey guys...figured i'd post this in a new topic as its nothing to do with a rad leak anymore.

went to the garage today and got the codes read. I got 7 codes back, neither of which is the IAC anymore (one good thing at least).

Summary of running: the car starts and idles fine. Bucks and hesitates (drops rpm's) whenever foot is on the accelerator. Will run and idle fine if in a high gear and coasting (can coast at 30mph all day long in 5th gear without touching the gas pedal).

Codes are:

P0412 - Secondary air injection system switching valve A. Circuit Malfunction.

P0123 - Throttle position sensor. High input.

P0351 - Ignition coil A primary/secondary circuit malfunction.

P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor.

P0139 - O2 Sensor Slow Response. Bank 1, Sensor 2.

P0138 - O2 Sensor High Voltage. Bank 1, Sensor 2.

P1391 - Intermittent loss of CMP or CKP.

I've changed plugs and wires, cleaned IAC and used Gm Cleans intake cleaner.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

anybody?? would it be all caused by coil? or O2 maybe?

and does anyone know what CMP or CKP is?

They would be Cam Angle and Crank Position Sensors

P1391 is: Intermittent loss of Camshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Position Sensor

that means, for a quick second, your engine has no idea where your cam/and or crank are positioned.

I would probably try replacing those sensors or at least checking on them making sure the wires and harness are all good.

thanks for the info so far. i just finished checking my coil, and that all checks out perfectly.

I also did a keydance and got the following codes:
36 - Pulsed secondary air injection solenoid circuit. (It says its a legacy code and was removed in 96. How can i tell if this was removed from my 95?)
43 - Ignition coil primary circuit or misfire
11 (twice) - loss of crank or cam sensor
21 (twice) - O2 codes

I am going to clean up the cam sensor...i assume its on the front drivers side of the engine.

As for the crank sensor, i have no idea where that is located. Any help would be great.

car is getting progressively worse each day

Crank sensor is right above the oil filter.

the crank sensor is near the bottom, back, passenger side or the block.

it was 1 10mm bolt holding it in.

When you take out the cam sensor, just take out the thin green gasket and clean the sesor real good. it will probably be all oily and shit. replace the gasket and put it back on.

I'd also unlug the + on your battery (and let sit for 10 min) and reset the ecu :thumbsup

just called uap/napa to get a price on cam and crank sensors. Guy said there are two crank sensors listed...upper and lower. I always thought there was one...whats up with this?

They might be talking about the cam sensor as the "upper" one. I'm wondering if the source of the codes are related to the cam/crank sensors. I'd switch those first.

when i bought the car, i was given a second engine with the car. I dont have it on hand as i have no where to put it, so the guy i bought the car off is storing it for me for another week or so. Went down tonight to pull of the crank sensor (which looked new) but it wouldn't come out. Top ended up breaking off it and the base stayed stuck in the engine. Why would this have happened? Seized in due to storage?

Also, was looking at two more sensors of some type on the back of the engine. One was on the passenger side, and one was in the middle. Any ideas what these two sensors are? There are also a few empty holes which would have had something in them at some time, but I have no idea what. Anywhere I can get a picture of the back of the motor pointing out what is what?

Finally, the engine looks to be a little different than mine for one reason. The bolts for my IAC are horizontal, however, the bolts for the IAC on the spare engine are vertical. What would be the reason for this? Is the engine in the car not a 95 engine or the spare not a 95?

Guess I'm gonna have to break down and pay the 100 bucks for the crank sensor and 80 for the cam sensor :(

Thanks for any info....sorry for the book

also, my car only acts up once it is almost to operating temperature. I know the comptuer uses preset values from O2's, and a few other things when its cold, but wondering if it ignored the cam and crank sensors when its cold?

sorry for all the questions guys....but my car isn't working (getting worse by the day) and nobody can seem to tell me whats wrong

36 - Pulsed secondary air injection solenoid circuit. (It says its a legacy code and was removed in 96. How can i tell if this was removed from my 95?)

you'll have to get your ecu flashed to get this code cleared.

hey guys, was back and fourth between garages all day and nobody knows whats on the go....i think satan knew the least out of the garages i visited today. New crank sensor, new cam sensor, new coil....still no go....any ideas? :cry

car is running worse today...its a few degrees above freezing, warmest we've had it since i got the car. Not sure if this is just coincidence or if the problem is temperature related

please help :wallbash

Change your o2 sensor.

all places today told me not to change O2 because the code being thrown was for the second o2 which was just emmisions and it didn't control how the car would run

pile of crap?

oh yeah, i almost forgot...i had the codes read again today and they are a little different from saturday. I didn't get codes today, just descriptions from the tech

Codes for today:

P0412 - Secondary air injection system switching valve A. Circuit Malfunction.

P0351 - Ignition coil A primary/secondary circuit malfunction.

P0139 - O2 Sensor Slow Response. Bank 1, Sensor 2.

P0138 - O2 Sensor High Voltage. Bank 1, Sensor 2.

P1391 - Intermittent loss of CMP or CKP.

Map sensor circuit trouble

Note: there is no longer a code for TPS or Cam Position Sensor

why doesn't my car die when i pull the MAF sensor??
86847, RE: Engine Trouble (cont. from Rad Leak)

Okay, a few things.

A while back, you wanted to know what the three sensors were on the back of your block.

The one right above the oil filter on the timing belt side is the Crank position sensor.

The one in the middle I believe is the knock sensor

The one on the right is the oil pressure sensor.

Now, about the MAF. Our cars don't have a MAF, the 4g63's do. We have a speed density system with a MAP. That could be your problem! They're not cheap (I don't think, I've never replaced mine), but it could be the problem. The car uses the MAP to figure out how much air is coming into the engine (along with the temperature so it knows density) and calculates fuel accordingly. It could be dumping fuel in if the MAP is reading wrong, causing your car to not run right and that might have gunked your O2.

There was a discussion on the rear O2 a while back. if I remember right, the conclusion was that it does play with fuel/timing, although I wouldn't swear by that. I'd say throw another one in and change the MAP. There can't be many more things that this can be!

Good luck,
Brian

Thanks a million for the info Brian. With regards to the MAF question, what is the sensor on the intake mani right above the IAC?
I assume the sensor on the opposite end of the intake is the MAP. I was asking because a while back when I cleaned my IAC, i tried to reset it by a method i found on here which was to pull the MAF while the car was running and it would reset the IAC to home position.

The reason i bring this up now is I was wondering if maybe there was a wiring problem and the car isn't reading from those sensors.

Glad I could help man :)

The sensor above the IAC is the TPS (Throttle position sensor). Obviously, the computer needs this to know where the throttle plate is, so it knows how much air's going into the motor...blah blah blah.

Just as a side note, most often MAF's are placed further down the intact tract, not right on the throttle body. Many are right after the air filter. This helps reduce/eliminate the pulsing of air going on in the intake manifold, more at part throttle, lower speeds.

You're correct on the MAP placement, opposite end of the intake manifold.

I think there's a way to check to see if the IAC is in the correct home position in the Haynes manuel (you measure how far the plunger is out). That could be causing a low idle.

I'll check when I get home--I'm at work now--and let you know.

Good luck,
Brian

couldn't find another ECU to try in the car first or last....took out the computer and pulled the board out of the case. Cleaned it up a little and the car has been running good ever since. I'm sure theres just something loose inside somewhere that is now making a connection so i'm on the search for a new computer now.

Thanks for all the input guys

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead....but I'm away working now for a month and just got access to a comptuer with the internet.

I sent away my computer before leaving home to get it rebuilt. Got a call on my cell today telling me that my comptuer checked out fine and there is nothing wrong with it.

Please help me...i'm beyond out of ideas

If the issue is temperature related, test the coolant temp sensor and the intake air temp sensor.

Oh, yeah, also try unplugging you speed sensor. I know it sounds odd, but if it shorts intermittantly, you could, intermittantly, lose cam/crank sensor input.
