86493, 2 very werid probs, runnin lean still and squelling when in gear Posted by Onnoffplayer, Feb-27-05 02:35 PM
I have a 97 eclipse rs all motor and just got done with a rebuild. Now first off i'm running a lean air/fuel on ma gauge but the CEL doesn't come on and the car was idling rough, so i had got the old gas outta my tank and put some new gas in with some fuel treatment. Still had the problem, so i played wit my intake cam gear to every degree i could and found that at 5 degrees advanced the ilde sounds perfect but i still have a lean air/fuel (also i know the blinky light air/fuel gauge is not the most accurate but it shouldn't be that far off). So my first question is, is what could be causing it to still be running this lean. Next before i adjusted the cam gear whenever i would be on the throttle there was never any noise and it would sound perfect, just had the rough idle. Now that i;ve adjusted the cam gear and it idles good, i go to drive it and any time i give it throttle IN GEAR (doesn't do it if i rev it in neutral or wit my foot on the clutch pedal), or ESPECIALLY whenever i downshift and start compression braking. I get this loud squelling noise that sounds alot like whenever i'm going quickly in reverse (which in reverse i know is normal). I've tried adjusting my belts, thinking that it was just the belts squelling but that didn't help any so i ruled that out as a possibility. I thought maybe it mite have something to do wit my throwout bearing but i just replaced it wit the rebuild. It's just strange that it started doing it after i adjusted that cam gear. If anyone has any ideas on this it would be greatly appreciated.

i wouldn't use a gauge that measures 0 - 1 Volt to tell you your lean. Narrowband is a waste of time.
Can you NOT point out where the squeling is coming from.

I knew that thing wouldn't be perfect but it could at least be somewhat accurate, hehe. No because it only happens in gear when i'm goin down the road, i don't have to be goin fast but simply the fact that I'm always inside the car makes it hard to tell what it is.

does it happen when your on the throttle? and then stop when you let off?
What i am getting at is, is it something under the hood or is it the transmission :shrug

It happens when i throttle, but only whenever i throttle in gear, i can rev it in neutral as much as i want and no sound. Whenever i let off the throttle in gear (such as bring it to 4000 in any gear and let off the throttle) then its gets much louder.

Do u think maybe the throwout bearing came off the clutch fork and mite be spinning freely? I just don't understand why it would have happened whenever i adjusted the intake cam gear, cause i wasnt even driving the car whenever i was adjusting it. Just cranking it and listening to it idling.

andjusting the intake cam gear had nothing to do with putting the throwout bearing in wrong and it making this noise.
Obviousley it's in the transmission and it's fucked sooo......
You might as well start taking it apart again and see whats wrong cause, i know your not stupid. It's NOT going to just going away right :P

LOL definately not just gunna go away, i think i'm gunna take that little rubber boot off that goes around the clutch fork and look in there to see if it came off the throwout bearing. Thanx alot for ur help. I'll post on here tom and let yall know my progress.

Alrite, took off the slave cylinder and looked in there and nothing, clutch fork is still on the throwout bearing perfect. So i thought well just maybe one of the bolts that hook the driveplate to the flywheel may have come out, nope not it. I checked that cause this mornin it sounds different. It sounds like a clinking like sometings rattlings around in there real bad, i could tell cause now its doin it in neutral when the cars just idling. So now i'm just so pissed off at this damn car, i say fuck this car its lucky i'm not blowing it up. I'm so sick and tired of it, i'm just gunna take it to a mechanic. Fuck this piece of shit, i hate this car.

I'll take it! Before you blow someone's head off just humor me and try this. I don't know if you retarded your exhaust cam or not but why not just put your intake back to 0 and see if noise goes away. Then you can count out all the tranny problems. I cannot hear the noise and 6 degrees is not a lot but too much overlap under load can make "funny" noises. Hey, it's easy enough to do and worth a shot. MB

funny story, but i took it to the mechanics shop and he said he couldn't look at it till wed so i was bringing back home when it all of a sudden stopped and i was like huh. So i got back home turned off my car, got out and looked underneath and theres oil on the ground rite underneath the edge of the bellhousing. Thought about it and the rear main seal is spewing oil on the clutch and assembly and dripping out the bellhousing. I had actually searched on here and found that someone said that they put the rear main seal on and put the driveplate on to seat it. So i had done that and i knew it looked like it wasn't set rite since everything i had read said it had to sit flush wth the block but i said i'd give it a try. Well guess what, u cannot seat the seal with the driveplate, it does not sit flush with the block and whoever put that is an absolute idiot. So needless to say i'm not gonna take it to the mechanic now, just gonna drop the tranny and try it again i guess. I'm just gunna have to resist the urge to blow it up. However if i change my mind i'll post my explosion on here, lol.
