So I've been noticing a little bit of oil on my valve cover for a couple of months. Everytime I clean it up it'll be back in a few days, but it never gets any worse. It is heaviest behind the opening for the #1 plug and as you move down towards #4 it gradually thins out and by #4 it is gone. I thought I might be getting some blowby since the car does have 135K on it and I haven't touched the rings/valves/pistons/etc. but my comp. test yielded 185-190-186-183. It goes through a little bit of oil, maybe a quarter quart every 2 weeks, sometimes more. I realize these seem like relatively small issues but I'm thinking of doing some more extensive mods and I can't figure out where the oil is coming from. Any suggestions of where to check? It doesn't leak any oil on the ground, at least not that I've found.

check your oil cap dude, blowby wouldn't usually end up on top of the vavle cover outside of the motor... :wary and using up oil could just be your vavle seals because your compression is very nice.

Could be just your valve cover.

Oil cap is fine, that's what I first thought. How would I check the valve cover? I gave it a good look over, but I didn't take it off or anything.

I'm gunna sound like an idiot because I'm drawing a blank on what it's called, but the line that runs from the top of the valve cover to the intake has had oil in it. I used some clamps to tighten the connections so that it wouldn't leak, but do you think that could be it? And if it is what might be causing that?

it's your spark plug gaskets (the rubber o-rings inside the valve cover on the spark plus wells.

But if it was that, he would have oil all over the top in that area aswell. Im thinkn its still the valve cover on that side of the back. The best way to check is to just take it off and replace it, Its not at all expensive. Then you know you also have a new VC gasket.

pcv line.

if there is oil on the PCV hose, check that, and replace the Valve and hose if you have to, also check the top of your spark plugs, and see if there is any oil on those as well, and if there is, it is the spark plug seals.

I concur on the VC gasket. If you do replace ot be careful not to tighten the VC down too tight. I think it is supposed to be 9 in.\lbs. Not ft.\lbs.

Look, mine had the EXACT same thing as yours, come to find out it was just the pcv hose, like others have said. I pulled it off and it was all old and cracked. if it was the valve cover gasket, it be leaking on the edges, not on top of the cover.

I just replaced my PCV valve and hose when I did the VC gasket. $25 dollar job that brought me great peace of mind.
