alright guys, heres the deal...motor is out of my car, and since i am doing a complete rebuild, i am changing the oil pump. Only problem is....the crankshaft timing sprocket WILL NOT come off.
i have been trying on and off for a couple days now, using different pullers, and nothing will make it budge. if i don't get it off soon, i'm just going to cut it off, and i don't really want to do that.
so my question is..
is there any tips, advice, anything you guys can tell me to get this gear off?

you might want to try and heat it up, then try a puller at the same time.

use a 3 way puller. i had to tap new threads into mine and break it off. i tried cutting it, you looking at about 4 hours to cut that thing off man. also, when u do get it out, make sure you dont loose your half moon aka crank key! its a little piece that goes in the crank to keep the gear from slipping.

i tried heating it just a few hours ago, after the original post. that didnt do a damn thing. i have been using a 3 bolt puller, using the original bolt holes, but it just doesnt want to give...
this thing is driving me insane..
well.. keep the ideas coming, hopefully i can get it off by the end of tomarrow.

I had the same problem. What I did was put the puller on and put alot of pressure on it. But be careful not to break the puller. Use and acetylene torch and heat up the pulley until it starts turning orange. Take a hamer and tap on the end of the puller bolt that goes in the crank. Also you may want to try to put a little more pressure on the puller ever now and then.

Oh and one other thing watch out for fire.:whoa The oil seal might catch on fire. Mine didn't, but it was smoking. If you don't have an acetylene tourch you might want to try mapp gas, it burns hotter than propane.

o i forgot to mention i had to use an impact wrench to pull mine off as well!

Heat + 1/2 Impact = God...
i knew thats what it would come down to, but i just didnt want to have to heat that close to the crank, but in the end, everything turned out ok..

It will come off like butter with hand tools if you use the right puller.

The problem is, the Grade-10 8mm x 1.0 thread bolts you need are about 120mm-140mm long. Those are next to impossible to find. Grade-8.8 will snap. Once you have the three special bolts, just put them in a 3-hole harmonic damper puller.



Whatever you do, DON'T use a 3-jaw puller, you will probably crack a chunk off the rim of the sprocket.
