People have said that the facrory alternator in not internally regulated. I think that it is, I can see what looks like a regulator inside the case. Most new cars are internally regulated too. I beleve the ecu just excites the alt. Anyone know the facts?

I forget exactly who said it but it came up because I wanted to run the MSnS standalone and people said I would need an external regulator for my alternator. I thought it was internally regulated. Thanks.

you know...i have always wondered the same thing...one time, my curiosity led me to call up a mitsu dealership and see what they say...they said it is internally regulated...for some reason i wanted a double check, so i thought, hey, ill call auto zone and see what they say...and if i remember correctly they said the exact opposite of what mitsubishi said...wierd...

it is internally regulated. Look on the alt at the multi wire plug.....that is the regulator portion of the alt. the one red wire is the alt output. The ECU actually switches the reg on and off, if you eliminate the factory ECu you will need to install an old one wire alternator with an external red. I am sure you can make the factory one work without the ECU i just am not sure how, never looked into it.

ECU regulates the voltage. I tried to get one rebuilt and the shop said it had no internal regulator. I've got one with 72k miles that I'll sell to ya for $30 + shipping. Goodluck man!
