85896, what is the top speed limit or an RS?
Posted by 97grnRS, Feb-11-05 05:02 PM
i was always wondering how high they will go. ive only gotten mine to 130 but never past that. it didnt cut off or nothin i just ran out of highway. as far as the stock ecu is concerned is there a limit on 97 rs?

just fuel cut and whatever the aerodynamic limits of the car are for however much power you're pushing. our cars don't have speed limiters.

the only thing limiting our top speed is our limited power... but if you do the math on the gear ratios, i believe you will redline 5th at around 156

huh... thats interesting. Someone on this board a while back said that there was a speed limiter in the stock ecu and that was one of the reasons for the AFX ecu upgrade(and no im not talking about redline).

I thought they said the limiter was at 130mph or something like that.

Can anyone confirm that there is not a speed limiter?

I have only gotten it up to 120mph so i dont have any knowledge on the subject, but im just wondering if anyone knows for SURE since i thought someone on here said differently.

i would be interested to know.

nope, heres a quote from the howell site on the af/x computer page: "like stock- No mph cutout whatsoever - top end is unnnnn-limited!- " so there is no stock speed limiter. the rev limiter is what it raises. the speed limiter is on the turbo models because of the H rated tires, it had a speed limiter of 138-140. i guess they just assumed an NT could never get there haha

I had my stock 96 with 120,000 miles at 153 mph ( warped the hell out of my rotors though trying to stop)

WOW that was stupid. ON the stock tires too??

best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph(no traction)

I have got my 95 RS up to 130 also and it was smooth as silk, no wobbling or anything but I couldn't get it to go any faster. I have V-rated speed tires. I also have 169000+ miles on my car. I wish I could remember the RPM but it was around 5,000-5,500. I take long trips every other weekend and I usally drive at about 90-100 MPH. Do you think this is really bad for the motor just as long as the car is checked before I leave. Long trip=4 hours.

with some searching, youd find your answers. this had been discussed like 100000 times because every newb asks this question at least once. the only eclipse with a limiter is the GST and its limited to 130. everything else goes untill it either cannot overcome the wind resistance, or it hits fuel cut at 7200rpm. gearing with our cars have shown a feasable speed of 200mph -+.

You sure about that one? i dont think its 200mph, i believe its 156mph. my 3rd goes to 100 and my 4th goes to 120-125, im pretty sure 5th isnt going to go to 200.

my car feels like im in the middle of a tornado at 80mph lol. i got new tires, cross drilled rotors, new brake pads, and it still is shakey as hell. i think i may get the alignment checked.

I must have been reading about the GS-T speed limiter, but i knew someone said something about the limiter lol

Thanks guys

Your cross drilled rotors and pads have what effect on your handle while cruising at those speeds? None.

It is not very safe to be traveling at those speeds with stock suspension. Another reported mod to add that increases tractino and control is the chin spoiler. Supposedly it adds greater down force on the front end and aids in handling at 120+ speeds. Otherwise a good suspension set up will aid in controlling the vehicle through alne changes and curves where your OEM setup decided to give up at around 90-100 mph.

wow killer.

Why dont you try driving on the highway with a warped rotor and a broken brake pad and then come talk to me. because trust me, it has an affect.

I never said that broken brake parts would cause issues. I was saying your upgraded rotors & pads offer no upgraded performance during cruising.

If they replace my broken parts then YES, they do have effect

Thanks for the input though

You have an automatic don't you. Also I think you need to get the CEL checked.

And he has the cruise control on LOL!

When I went 135-140 in the GS, I think there was corn on either sides of the road, creating a kind of tunnel effect lol. I could of kept going but I ran out of road because it took me quite a while to get there.

edit - Oh, I think that was just with headers and a muffler. Also MTX.

That's incorrect. With a 3.94 5spd you cannot make it past 160mph. A 3.55 is a whole different story. Either way. NA you won't make it past 130 NA. Just not enough power.

imagine what the top speed is like in a 290HP v8 with 3.27 gears...i got scared at 160 and stopped

also remember that a V8 isnt going to be able to redline as high as we do.

He still hit 160, lol. Now take that V-8 and add a set of cams (4 f'in cams, ha) and a supercharger or something, push it to 450hp and hit 160 in 15-16 seconds. I digress, like stated above, the only limiting factor is our 140bhp and 130ftlbs at the crank.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the redline of the 4v 4.6l in the mach I 7000-7500?

I shift my pushrod v8 at 6300 (shift, not redline). It's designed to spin up to 7200 or something. But 6300 is optimum from my dyno results.

My brother shifts his roller v8 at like 7500.

I think the modular v8's can turn just as high RPM's as we do.

it's all about rod ratio and the ability to move air. Sure, pushrod valvetrain will create more heat, but there's no reason it shouldn't be able to rev just as high.

Exactly, look at NASCAR. Don't they turn around 9k?

are you comparing regular V8's to nascar cars? lol
