everything is finally fixed on my car, it runs great...but i still have no idea how fast it's moving or hwo many miles i've finished with the break in period. the culprit...speed sensor. i'm still getting code 15, i removed the sensor, cleaned it, its connector, and the connector on the wiring harness...still no reading. before i go out and spend who knows how much money on yet ANOTHER sensor that was damaged when i blew up, i'd like to know how to test the oem sensor to determine if theres something else causing the CEL because if i buy and install a new sensor and still dont get a reading, i cant return the sensor.

btw, the speedometer on my HKS TT doesnt give a reading either, so it's not the gauge cluster thats causing the problem.

if anyone knows how to test it, please tell me what type of meter i need to use, where i can buy,rent, or pay someone to use said meter, and what the actual testing process is...the speed sensor isnt even mentioned in the chiltons manual so i have no ideas where to look fro testing parameters on this particulat part.

Actually the Speed sensor is a Hall effect sensor, therefore you would need a graphing scope to test it. You can test the harness to make sure the sensor is getting voltage. You should have a ground/5+/ECU Signal at the plug. since you have the TT wired in i take it you know which is the ECU signal wire, test the other two. if you have voltage and ground you sensor is shot or the little gear inside may have broken or fallen off. Also check to make sure the sprocket on the Diff has not come loose. Thats happened to a coupel guys here

Actually, it's even easier than that. Connect a sensor to the harness, and spin the gear on it. if you hear the idle change (because the VSS provides idle feedback) then the sensor is working... pretty simple.

You could also take the gear off and stick the square end in a drill and spin it and watch the speedo. Sounds like a bad sensor to me.

so i take it its safe to run the car with the hole in the tranny where the sensor would normally be. thanks for the advice, that could save me some cash

yea maybe place a paper towel over it to avoid crap getting into the tranny.

dino, which way is it supposed to turn, or does it matter? i dont want to insert it into a drill and turn it the wrong way...does it matter whether it spins clockwise or counterclockwise (when looking at it from the bottom of the sensor)

when you look at it from the top of the sensor, it should spin clockwise. when you remove it and look at the gear it will spi counter-clockwise.

thanks...and no offense, but you haven't been around here long enough to know that it's not a good idea to recommend that i leave towels anywhere under the hood of a car :) ask dino about that one cuz he thinks it's funny. i however, do not. fuck a towel.

I think that mine messed up tonight b/c the speedo quit working, and when I would come to a stop, then it acted like it was gonna quit running for a sec then go back to normal, and it didnt do that until the speedo stopped.

Is the sensor a mitsu only part, or can I get it at advance? It sounds like something that you could only get OEM.

you can get it at parts stores...for $90.

Thats how the engine reacts to a failed VSS.
