85711, I no longer burn oil! Posted by SILVERNT, Feb-07-05 07:01 PM
after leaving a trail of blue smoke whenever i pressed the gas, i finally got fed up. Compression test yielded 220psi on all 4. So on a whim, i picked up a new PCV valve. Upon removing the old one, i decided to blow in it to see if it worked. instead of stopping flow one way, it was free flowing. $2 part has caused me god knows how much in oil.
bottom line, check your PCV valve.

lol...i jus bought one too...i realized that back in the day i took mine off when i replaced the hose...and never put one back on. That was a good year or so ago. Think that can cause any long term damage?

Most likely not. You might have some buildup on the backs of your intake valves from sucking oil in. Just run some good cleaner through to clean them and you'll be fine.

Sup guys... So a PCV value is needed? is that ONLY for non-turbo cars? Coz as of now, I took off my PCV value, capped the Intake hole. and I run both hose off the value cover to the catch can.
Is that a good idea? or should I return it back to one hose to PCV to intake and the other to the catch can?
Thanks again. I am turbo charged. Gil

They have them on both turbo and non-turbo. I would put it back on. The only reason I would take it off would be if you had total seals. I have total seals and mine's off.

So the engine DO need a PCV value? I do'nt get why it is needed or is important?
So now that I dont have it, what happen to my engine? Can someone explain it to me? Thanks.

I will see if I can explain why your engine "DO" need a PCV valve. I "do'nt" think I can do it, though.
Oil in the sump of your engine gets hot, which is a consequence of combustion, but is important for keeping the oil from becoming contaminated. Gasoline is vaporous at a lower temperature than oil, as is water (and coolant - Ethylene Glycol).
When your engine is at temperature, the air above the oil is a swirling mass of vaporous nastiness. This is a good opportunity to clean all of this out with a vacuum.
Since no rings will seal 100% (with 0% leakdown), there will always be these lighter contaminants added to the oil supply, and the engine relies on having them sucked into the combustion chamber through the PCV valve. There are a few schools of thought as to how to best run a PCV system on a turbocharged engine, but your best bet is to keep your PCV system stock, unless you know what you're doing. Just keep an eye on the stock valve, as it isn't intended to hold back greater-than-ambient pressures (boost).
There are other issues of gaining some power by creating negative relative pressure in the crankcase, and actually "pulling" the pistons down, but that is another issue, and there are better ways of accomplishing this.
I hope that this helps, as this is a highly misunderstood subject. Maybe I'll post some more information later, but I'm on a train, and should probably get back to work.

ya ur car will idle like shit if you dont have one. Just keep it clean. I put a crankcase breather on my car and it wouldnt start/idle properly, but then again maybe my car is just crap :thumbsup.

It's my understanding that the breather goes on the inlet tube of the Valve cover, not in place of the PCV valve. It's there to prevent the vacuum from the manifold from sucking TOO hard on the PCV and sucking oil through instead. I could be wrong though.
A lot of guys are having problems with their PCV valves under boost. Is there any replacement(like for an SRT-4, or a turbododge of some sort) that's build to handle boost. I mean, they're just check valves for the most part. My question would be is if they're not the right size, would they create a "vacuum leak" from letting too much air through and mess up idle or something? I don't know, just throwing an idea out. I haven't searched on it, so forgive me if it's been mentioned already.

If you have a turbo there is a way to get rid of this valve. Run the outlet from the valve cover to a catch can. From the catch can run a line to the intake pipe before the turbo. The turbo inlet creates the suction to pull out the crankcase pressure. There is no need to run a line to the intake manifold, this can be bypassed altogether. This is a proven method that is used by many of the guys I know at the track, works beautifully.

can anybody verify this? something about hosing my compressor blades with combustion gas contaminated oil makes me wary

Why? Never heard of a draw through carberated turbosystem?

Thats why there is a catch can in the mix. Its also best to stuff the catch can with stainless steel wool or long cuttings to more efficiently catch the oil(with a screen of course)unlees the catch can is already baffled.

interesting, im reading a lot about this now.
would this be a good idea? the PCV hose from the valve cover, remove the pcv valve, route that hose to the catch can and then from the catch can to the intake pipe before the turbo? what do you do with the valve cover breather? (driver side of the valve cover) route that to the catch can too? or tee it off with the pcv valve hose? or would it be a better idea to leave the pcv valve connected and just route the hose to the catch can with the pcv valve still inline? and then obviously cap off the original spot on the manifold where it was going in
edit: i found these pictures rather helpful

also RRE has good info on the PCV and catch can for the evo8

Haha it wasn't that easy for me, I had to replace my valve guides. Crappy. Ahh well, its done now.

85768, RE: I no longer burn oil! Posted by Kirby, Feb-09-05 07:30 AM
So if you have Total seal rings and you remove the PCV to keep it from scavanging oil, this is a bad thing? I basicly blocked off the PCV in my car and now only have the breather on the driverside routed to a "catch can"... Is this a problem???

85770, RE: I no longer burn oil! Posted by ner947, Feb-09-05 07:45 AM
I've been having PCV issues too. I replaced mine with one of the $3 ones from Autozone, but although it's brand new it still doesn't seal like it should. If I don't go into boost at all my catch can will stay empty. Otherwise, it will fill up about 100-300 mL per day (~50 miles round trip to and from class), which is a LOT of oil. I'm probably going to redo the whole system with a completely different valve at some point.
BTW, where did you get your valve from? Who's the MFG? I don't mind buying a few different $2 valves to see which ones work best.

well. i dunno on all my hondas ive had and my eclipse i just keep the valve in but i run it straight to the ground and just let it there out of the way. i dont like the stuff going back into my mani. i dunno it doesnt seem to hurt anything for me.

Wait, so you just have the hose with the PCV in it disconnected from the mani and dangling there? How is the PCV supposed to open with no vacuum from the mani? Did you plug the inlet port on the mani with something so you don't have a vacuum leak?

85853, RE: I no longer burn oil! Posted by 97grnRS, Feb-10-05 11:13 AM
yea i plugged the vacuum port. and no its not just dangling there. i ran it to a metal line that runs near my evap canister and to the ground which i had for something else . but it works fine for me. it dont take much to open that valve.. if there is that much pressure it will open.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but the idea isn't for it to open under pressure from the engine.
If you read the post a while back, the idea is to evacuate gases from the engine. How could it evacuate gases if there's nothing pulling the gases out?
