I removed all the main studs. Is there anything besides the studs that hold the bedplate to the rest of the block? I can't figure out how to remove the oil pump because my star keys are too long. But do I have to remove the oil pump to remove the bedplate?

Thought you had a 4g63. They have bedplates too? I was thinking they used traditional caps or something. :shrug It's been a while, but I want to say, on the 420a, you would need to at least remove a couple botls from the oil pump that go into the end of the bedplate, but I might be wrong on that.

I got a 420a. Whats the best way to remove the oil pump? I just cant seem to get the star tools to fit without the crank being in the way.

I honestly don't remember if the oil pump is bolted to the bedplate. If any of the bolts in the pump line up with it, then yank them out. As for removing the bedplate once all the bolts are out (including the one under the oil filter mount - tends to get overlooked), give it a couple taps on the side with a mallet or hammer. Don't hit the mating surface at all, but you can tap it to break it loose if need be.

Ironically enough, I will be removing my bedplate and oil pump this weekend on the old 97 block that came out the summer of 03. :P

Just joined az2gnt.net. But as far as the oil pump, I removed what I can except for those star bolts. And the pump swivels as far as it can until it hits parts of the block. Is it possible for the bedplate to fuse with the block due to severe overheating, etc, in other words...what I'm afraid of.

Oil pump must be unbolted to remoove the bedplate...think about it the crank goes straight through the middle of the oil pump...ergo it lies half on top portion of block and bedplate...you need definitively to remoove the crank sproket and the front oil seal to do it right.....

BTW since i now read you took the oil pan out...there should have been a total of 22 bolts out of the bedplate remooved...10 of the bearing cap section and 12 of the outer bedplate...DO NOT under any circumstance try and pry open the bedplate by inserting a sharp, pointy object (specially where the CAS hole is)...there should be some points where with a rubber malet you can softly "rap"(not strike hardly) so it comes off the 2 bedplate guides

Well thats just fantastic, the guy who had the block went to a performance shop who shoved a a long metal rod in the crank sproket bolt hole, so removing that pulley is a pain.

Ahhh ok...its not as bad as you think.....just get the right tool and its cake...

Spun bearing?? ack the enemy of the 420a...if it got treated soon enough it aint so bad

22? I counted 20, where are the other two? It also says in the 2gnt powertrain description that there are 20 main bolts.

ya theres only 20. if you can spin the oil pump around, that means its disconnected from the block/bedplate. might need to give it a wack.

If you've never removed the factory sealed bedplate, it is HARD to get it apart. The brown anaerobic sealant they use is strong.

If a rubber mallet wont do it, try prying on it from any angle you can use, just don't wedge anything between the two halves. I have had to use an air hammer and even a sledge to get bedplates off in the past.

Also, make sure the main bolt that's halfway underneath the oil filter pickup is removed.

thats not true. i removed the crank with oil pump and timing gear still attached. all you have to do is unbolt the oil pump completely, remove the bedplate bolts (even the hidden 10mm by the oil filter) remove the bedplate and wahlah.

this isnt the easiest way but my timing gear removal tool bolts got brokeoff inside the crank sprocket so i just removed the whole thing.
