85365, Rear Main Seal Problem.. Need Help Posted by EclipseTenzoR, Jan-28-05 05:34 PM
Yea, so I've used search but no results but the complaints other fellow 2gnt'rs have had with their rear main seal. I no doubt need to get this changed soon, but I am curious as to what other stuff I should probably do once I have the tranny off. Also where can I buy the gasket, I have tried google, mrgasket.com, summitracing and howell, still found nothing unless I over looked it somewhere. Is this something I could do myself if not I may just give my car to a buddy of mine that goes to a tech school and have him do this for me. So what seals should I buy.

You can get them at Napa. They run <$20 if I remember right. This would be an excellent time to replace yourclutch if you haven't yet. PT Cruiser clutch is a nice little upgrade for BPU cars. I have one on mine and like it. My 2 cents.

you can change it yourself in a day really. just drop the trans, ubolt the flywheel from the crank, and remove and replace the rear main seal. you cant really change any other things like the other seal in the oil pump unless your planing on removing the oil pump and shit. do it yourself, everyone could use the experience, thats what i did it :) good luck. also, howell does sell them seperately, but they are pricey. go to napa or advanced auto or suptin.

Ahhh, gotcha. I thought you meant to do that while he was doing his rear main.

Well, now might be a good time for you to do some research on the final drive mod for the bitchshifters. I remember hearing a lot about that back in the day as being good for a little more pick up. If nothing else, maybe a torque convertor with a higher(?) stall rating than stock. TC slips on and off just like a modular clutch. You could theoretically pick up the final drive mod at the jYard, get the experience taking the tranny apart there before attackin your own, then drop your tranny, swap the drive, TC and RMS, and be done in a weekend. It would make for a nice little project imo. Don't give up yet. :thumbsup
