85358, Power to coilpack but no spark?
Posted by Awsome98, Jan-28-05 03:03 PM
My car was working fine just a couple of days ago, then I re-located the battery to the trunk. Now I don't have any spark coming out of the coils. I checked the plug running into the coilpack and it has power and ground, the CAS has power and ground, so does the crank position sensor. I purchased a used ECU which didn't work, then a new ECU from the dealer and still no spark at all. I also disconnected the cruise control at the same time, and have a blocked off EGT with no EGT solenoid. If I disconnect the cam angle senson I get a cel and a code stating that it is not getting a signal so I am pretty sure that the ECU is at least good. Does anyone have any ideas? I have searched all of the threads but haven't found any quite like mine, from what I've read if the ECU is bad there is no cel at all.

bad coil?

test the coil with ohm meter. Measure the resistance between the terminals, put one lead from the DMM on one terminal and the other on the terminal directly to the right of it. In other words, measure across not up and down. Should be 0.51-0.61 ohms or 11.5-13.5 kilo-ohms, if not replace that bitch.

If you are getting code "11" that is also the crank angle sensor. Make sure you have a good crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor. btw, That cel code also refers to the timing being off one tooth.

P.S. be carefull removing the crank angle sensor as they do easily break.

I read your post more carefully... ok so your sensors are okay, may check all of your grounds to your battery. Did you car start at all and die out or does it just not start?

No spark maybe cause theres no CAS or Crank AS to tell the ECU WHEN to throw a spark?

In my days I have NEVAR seen a post where someones COILPACK has gone bad.

I did some more tests, I am getting a RPM signal from the ECU so the sensors should be ok. It instantly throws a code if I disconnect any sensors. My coilpack is good, I just can't figure the damn thing out. It does not start at all, there is absolutly no spark. I have a MSD DIS-2 that I could install, but it would still need to recieve the signal from the ECU to create the spark wouldn't it? Any ideas? I have every tool at my disposal that I could ever possibly need, so if you guys have any creative ideas that have worked for you just let me know.

The coilpack pinout is 1- 2&3 trigger 2 - 12v+, and 3- 1&4 trigger. It grounds through the plugs. if you're getting a ground on any of those wires, I'd guess you have a short somewhere.

Thanks, I'll check that out today.

Actually, now that my head is no longer in my ass, the triggers are ground pulse IIRC. So you very well might see a ground on them... if they're triggering.
85438, RE: Power to coilpack but no spark?

Yeah they are ground trigger pulses...I use a red/green LED test light to test signals like that. It will flash the green LED quickly as the signal pulses. I use that test light for testing things like injector triggers too..Its the easiest way to see if the ECU is sending out the triggers, or isolating wiring problems.

hey wuz up? i hate to say this but it's not your ecu like you've been thinking! here's something to do and let me know what happens: have the plug that goes into your coil pluged into the coil. pull out one of the spark plug wire from the head put the end of the plug close to any ground on your car or simply put a phillps screwdriver into the plug and put it close to any ground on the car have a friend try to turn on the car and see if you see any spark whatsoever (be carefully you may get shocked if your not careful:dark ) now pay attention you may still get no spark butif you do that's a good sign. your ECM is what's bad!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know you may think i'm wrong but trust me check it out you can go to any junk yard they should have one for about $100- $150 depends where your at. just do that and you'll be driving you DSM in no time! (whatever you do dont buy it from a company called ECM WORLD based out of somewhere in texas, there bad business!)

if anything hit me up @ lostsoulsfamily@aol.com

isn't ECM just another way of saying ECU, interchanging the word "unit" and "module" ?

actually i'm with you on that one but the thing is is that like my model 95 gs it bring an ecm which is in the engine bay and theres the ecu thats behind the radio in your car. so really the answer is no , but correct me if i'm wrong bro.

You are wrong. The ECU is in the engine bay. There is nothing in the dash unless its an ATX car, in which case there is a TCU behind the radio.

Just to let you know where you might be getting your information from, the ECU is behind the radio on 4g63's(GST's, GSX's).

Any takers? This guy goes beyond spreading misinformation and straight to spreading ignorance. Has the board had it's shots this year, Dino? This disease is spreading. :rolleyes

Man have you checked the fuse for the ECU under the hood? I know I may have been able to tell if the fuse is good by some of the things he has said but I don't know these cars very well. My mother's Talon did the same thing one time and that was the first thing I checked.

yo homie listen i don't know you and i really don't care about your punk ass. but listen to me fool i came in here hoping to give and receive advice. i don't know what's your beef but where i come from ( which is the south) i would've already busted you in your shit. i don't want problems but you just need to chill with the shit, cuz i'm not here starting nothing. if i maybe wrong about something then be a man fool and tell me. you just hiding behind that screen but if i cought you in the black top then it'd be on. so like i just said i'm not looking for beef i just want to help those who may have gone through something i have with my ride. that's all GROW UP! if i'm wrong email me or let's debate that's what this forum is for!

hahahahahahaha. wowzers, y0.

ECM and ECU ARE the same thing.
ECM = Enginge Control MODULE.
ECU = Engine Control Unit
TCM = (behind the radio) Transmission Control Module
PCM = Powertrain Control Module.

Plethora of abbreviations for the same things.

Did the originator of this post ever reply back with any follow up info?

Preemptive apologies for thread jacking (he deserves this imo).

First of all, I am NOT your "homie." Second of all, if you really didn't care about my opinions, then you would just shrug them off like anyone else with sufficient IQ to tie their own shoes does. And what makes you think I'm white? You think that being able to write at a high school level is a characteristic only white people possess? If so, then I feel sorry for you, man. That's damn ignorant.

You joined 2GNT for advice; both to give and receive. Let me give you some more, if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, you need to spend more time receiving advice. You haven't given anyone any advice and I can tell you your name has come up in several conversations elsewhere, none of them being good. Every time you open your mouth, you demonstrate just how fucking ignorant you are.

You want to know what my "beef" is? I'll tell you again (since I've already stated it several times for you here). My problem is that you post dumb shit. Anyone who knows anything about these cars knows the following:

They only have ONE head. Not "heads," but HEAD.

You ALWAYS install a headgasket. It's not an option.

Top speed of a 2GNT is both physically limited by gearing and insuficient power to overcome wind resistance at speeds greater than somewhere near 130, so your claim of 165 is total bullshit.

You can not beat a 5.0L Mustang.

You can not beat a 4.6L Mustang.

You have never even SEEN a 5.4L Mustang, and had you, you couldn't hang with his ass either.

When an experienced tuner says they get no spark from the coil pack, they don't need your dumb ass screw driver method to figure out what they just fucking said they knew. Not to mention he'd said he'd already replaced the ECU with a new one.

There was never a twin turbo DSM. EVER.

And if you actually imported a DSM from Japan, you're a fucktard, as they were ALL made in Illinois. There is no such thing as a JDM DSM.

Continuing on, in the engine bucking thread, a broken motor mount will have nothing to do with the engine running or not unless some retard ran an important signal wire through it and it was cut by the movement of the engine. Looking at the muffler is not only useless advice, it's retarded. That's like telling someone to check the air pressure in their tires if they're worried about crankwalk.

Finally, 2GNT is not a place for people to debate shit like this. It is a resource for people to get information and help working on their cars. You may have the right idea about that, but until you know what the fuck you're talking about, you are no help to anyone. You obviously don't read the poster's questions, and if you do, there's no way you're comprehending what they say. The things you tell people you've done in your car will get people killed trying because they just aren't possible without more work than most people have or ever will do. The "advice" you give to people will get them laughed at by anyone who even remotely knows what they're talking about.

I could give two shits and a fuck what you think about me. You can talk as hard a game as you want and it makes no difference. Fact of the matter is, I'm right and you're a complete fucking idiot. I was going to send this as a reply to your ignorant email, but since you posted the same exact shit here, I figured I'd give everyone a spot of entertainment by watching me hand you your own ass frosted with a candle on top right here in the open.

If you feel like you have to come up with some smart ass commentary to try to defend yourself here, feel free, but you don't have a leg to stand on. Ordinarily, I would tell someone like yourself to be sure and wear a helmet and knee pads before they wanted to argue with me more, but I don't have anything further to say to you. Pack it up, son. You're done.

End thread jacking. You may resume your technical discussion now. :) (Sorry - Felt it was my duty or something.)

I'd be best if he would just piss off. I have one more piece of advice for this young wank. Civics are the fastest cars ever made, I think you should go buy one like every other space cadet out there. Leave us alone.

As for the coil pack thing, Get a 12v LED and 300 ohm resistor, wire them inline and test for current between pin 1+2 and 2+3. Some multimeters cannot show a reading as the duty is very fast. Make sure you put the diode in the right way, Pins 1 and 3 are ground, 2 if +, so short lead from the diode in pin 2, long lead in 1 or 3, and you have to use a resistor or you'll burn up the led.

"Yo dr, mad props,man!"

Holy shit, when I saw you first statement I knew it would be good but you must be some kind of expert at this! Man I'm cryin'I'm laughing so hard. And to think I answered his e-mail privately.

Well, I found out the problem, I just forgot to post it. When cranking the motor I noticed that oil was gushing out between the bedplate and the block. I pulled the motor back out only to find that the anerobic compound had somehow been blown out by the oilpump and the o-ring between the bedplate and block was missing. I have no idea how this happened but the lack of oil pressure must have been preventing the spark because when I replaced that o-ring and resealed the whole deal it started right up. Now I have 2 extra ECU's, anybody intrested in buying one?
