85281, Reinstalling Camshalf Main Bearing Caps. Posted by er0ckz, Jan-26-05 09:20 AM
What's up guys. I am in the process of putting my head back together. While I was in school today, I was told by my teacher that the caps have to be in the same exact location as it was stock to allow lubrication of oil in between the caps and the camshalf to avoid burning up the head.
When I first got the head which I purchase from a 2gnter, everything was off and the caps was not on the head. So I did not get to make note where each cap belongs.
- Can any tell me or give me any information of where each cap is positioned in the head.
- What is the torque spec on the bolts of the caps?
Thank you for any information regarding this post.

The caps have L and R with numbers and arrows on them. L is the exhaust side R intake and the arrows point to the cam gears. The caps are numbered from 1 to 6 I think. 1 being closest to the cam gears.

i think the torque specs on the small bolts (8mm head) are 9ft Lbs and the bigger ones (10mm head) are 20ftlbs

Also, be SURE to put RTV on the end bearing caps, or you can have an oil leak. Instead of trying to decribe exactly where it should go, check out the factory service manual, or it may even be in a Chiltons..

RTV?
I always used anaerobic.

RTV will take the clearance out of spec. Anaerobic won't.
Use anaerobic if you can... VERY VERY thin layer of RTV if you can't.
