84792, hehe, my engine is broke
Posted by grain, Jan-15-05 05:41 AM
welp, hakf way down illinois back to florida, my car started shaking really bad. then shutoff. wont start. get it towed to brothers house in carbondale. take off head after night of drinking, and find that my valve spring retainer clips decided to take a vacation from thier job, and threw the valve into the combustion chamber. nice si ss valve, met my cp forged pistons. hofully it didnt destroy the rod or anything. a new head, and 4 ss valves wont kill me. i just dont understand why it happened all of a sudden. wasnt racing or anything. crusing about 80mph at 2800 rpms.

I'm glad to hear you know what happened to your car, when I talked to ya you still had some troubleshooting to do.

Shit! That's no good bro! Keep us posted. Look on the bright side. While the Eclipse is down, you can look all suave and debonair rolling around in a Talon that gets decent gas mileage. LOL.

You know you're a real tuner when you can drop a valve and just write it up to, "Oh well. I'll just rebuild that half the engine again." :thumbsup

whoa. same thing happened to xtremeRS... his was due to the fautly installation of a retainer though. im pretty sure.

has a nice collectors item of a horribly pitted forged piston though :p

Good lord..that brings back awfull memories..trashed the head, piston, cracked my flexplate, and messed up the center hub on the clutch disk..Your head will be screwed, the piston will be screwed, and most likely the cylinder walls are gouged a bit. I had a few good gouges and scratches on that cylinder, but I just honed it for a new set of rings...it works fine, but compression isn't what it used to be of course. Hopefully you have better luck than I did :)

damn john, i was hoping the coolant would be your only problem. Your engine sounded and ran great up in Lansing. I guess your string of bad luck continued in IL. Hopefully everything goes well putting it back together.

ya, well, i misposted, didnt take off head, just valve cover. will prolly take off head tommorrow after the nights round of drinks. but seems like the ol' take it apart and see the damage type of deal. funny thing, is that the machine shop that installed the retainers, and shit just closed its doors december 31st. ill try to get some pics up.

i just threw an idler pulley, didnt bend all the valves up. they're standard sized ss valves, if u need some hit me up i'll hook you up, they're all gettin replaced, they only have maybe 8000 on them.

but that sucks, i feel ur pain.

That sucks....

Question though: How do you cruise at 80 and only rest at 2,800 rpms? Pretty sure mine at 80mph would be closer to 3,500...

We will be posting up some nice pics in a few minutes.

Ok John's pictures are uploading to my server now. They will be done in about 10 minutes. Here is the link. You might want to hit refresh to make sure you are seeing all of them.

I posted a link to the folder rather than the pictures cause they are quite large.

welp, piston 2 is def destroyed. and it seems some metal and some spark plug got into the other cylinders. so all the pistons have small to medium gouges in them. and cyl 2's bore could prolly be bored out to .060 (its at .040 now) but im not sure exactly what im going to do now with this car.

damn john im really sorry to see what's happened. I would have never thought something like that would come up while we were up in chicago. I wish the only problem you would have had was that damn coolant. Wish i had a spare head laying around i'd ship it to ya ASAP but im not so lucky. Hopefully things come together for you and things start to look up.

Oh man, that does indeed look familiar...ouch...I think mine was a bit more fucked up though, since i dropped 2 valves...here's what mine looked like.....I ended up getting a new head, piston/rings, and honed out that cylinder. It still had some small gouges in it, but it's still got around 185 psi compression...Hopefully it didn't fuck up your flexplate like it did mine...oh yeah, this was my motor...

Damn John. That sucks. Time to start swapping parts over to the Talon imo. Then you can pick up a stock block and drop that into the Eclipse. (You know you always wanted a fast Talon anyways, right?) ;)

Keep your head up brother. You can come out here this spring and cheel by the pool with your az2gnt bros over some free booze. :thumbsup
