OKay. I'm sitting there puffin a fatty, while in from of the gutted halfbreed (my car) :P

My buddy, (a welder and owns the silvia) is like, " We should mounnt the motor in the rear, just keep it so the tranny is on the drv. side, SOMEHOW mount the front suspension in the rear, figure a way to mount the engine and tranny right in the back seat area, figure out how to tie the front steering and control arms together, figure out how to hook up a shifter linkage, run a shitload of wire and voila!! mid-enigne, rear wheel drive eclipse :) Easy"

just like that. he said it.

I loled HARD and said "Okay, do it"

me lols again.

So whe go over to the block and measure the width, incl the oil pump width, and the bellhousing and figured it to be 17.5 + 2.25 + 19 = 38.5" wide.

there is roughly 36" between the rear strut mounts and ample the back seat for the motor to sit. Now the large 28" bottom mount that the tranny bolts onto would mount just at the point where the front of the rear seat is (like if you were sitting in the back, where the back of your knees were, :shrug does that make sense??) and extends into the rear spare wheels well. barely.

we then measure the axles and sorry to say, it would almost fuckin work. :shrug

The whole time I'm telling him, I can't believe we're actually talking about it. :shrug

anyways, i then brought up, "how are you going to run 10' of coolant line to and from the rad? okay......and the shifter linkage......ummmm what else.

lol.

Please discuss.......I don't know if anyone has "actually" measured something like this out or anything....ya know.

flame away......but remember.

I love you all dearly. :P

If your serious about cutting up your car to try it, maybe you should get ahold of the guy who did that in his first gen w/ the 4g63.

Find a rough Chassis for cheap Blair. Contact Vineet Singh on ChicagoDSM (lives 5mins from me), that is who chris is talking about and he can help you with some of the trial and error points. At this point he runs a twin engine but i know he mounted the front crossmember in the rear and i would suspect the entire front suspension as well but i am not sure exactly to what extent.

Also, if you actually got this done, and you wanted to add weight to the front to balance it, then just think how much this car is going to weigh... they are already heavy enough.

Go for it if you have the funds, why don't you do the radiator in the rear with some sort of scoop/ram air system to it, how does the MR2 do it? If your buddy is a welder then linkage should be cake, clutch should be easy with a slave cylindar. The only real problem I see with it is money, time, and keeping your sanity.

I've thought of trying to make a RWD 420A for a long while..but never even touched on the idea of a mid-engine thing.... I think you should get another chassis to try with tho, so you dont feel guilty..hell, while you're at that get the 2.4, turbo it, and throw it back there!!! :)

haha, yah, make a 2G wheel stander, then take it to the shoot out, and do 1/4 mile wheelie :eek

I think you guys are underthinking the whole thing. The whole weight distribution of the car would be completely screwed up. Plus I'm sure the suspension design of the car isn't expecting that much weight in the rear of the car so that screws up your struts and spring rates. Not to mention that IF you ever got it in there it'd probably oversteer severely.

Oh BTW, you aren't the first person to come up with that one either. :)

Call up Jesse James... they would do it for free and air it on monster garage!!!!

actually its a stupid idea and probably woulndt work so nobody in their right mind would actually do it... but then again thats why we have beer and weed so i say go for it!!!

it would understeer like a mother... all the weight on the back wheels, none in the front. oversteer would be the least of this abomination's worries. I say do it to a 1G non-turbo nobody cares about, not a 2G that is in prime shape with money already invested into it.

Posted by Pitchblack98, Jan-14-05 02:55 AM
one way to solve the front to rear weight ratio would be to put the gas tank up front. Granted youll have to add some more weight to it just to balance it but the tank full of gas should do a decent job.

Thura I have seriously spent many hours thinking about this project, even putting a lot onto paper nad measurements; weight distributon would be the majority of the work IMO. The suspention would would need to be sent to a chassis shop to have the valve rates calculated and then specs sent to Koni for custom valving. Koni will revalve the shocks for a price to your specs. Custom axles would be a necessity especially if you went with a 4bolt rear spindles and kept the rear knuckles. The issue with that may be strength. If you used the front there would be the tubular arms fab'ed up the make the rear solid (no turning).

Thats about all i am realy gonna say. If i were to ever start such a project i would want all my info secret. But until hell freezes over or i have more time........
